Hi,
Found this on ebay, says side mount for spare tyre - LRPV?? not sure...
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Rare-Military-Landrover-Series-Side-Mounted-Wheel-Mount-Ex-Army-/251083574079?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a75bf4b3f

I certainly do not claim to know very much at all, but I doubt the authenticity of it, cheers Dennis

Not so sure of that Dennis :D. It looks like a unit level mod. Pretty basic in design and construction.
Although slightly similar in configuration, it's not LRPV as the SASR used a different design. Apart from a single bolt for attachment to tub top capping, this mount has no restraint. The bracket/wheel would smack up against the side of the tub every time the vehicle drove over a decent bump. I suspect that the mounted wheel would be restrained at the bottom as shown on the Gunbuggy in the photo below.
It may be off a Gunbuggy :-\.

interesting... esp that photo Tommy... I havent seen many with that mod (side mounted tyre) anyone recall seeing bolt holes or that lower bracket on the GB's theyve seen?
obviously though carraige of spares is a problem... on front bar = blast zone, rear = in zone again, on bonnet stops RCL from seating down ...
do we have any closeups of the rear "board" modifications seen on GB in SVN shots where boards are across rear opening with tyre mounted there?
or where they (as I suspect) just a "loose mount" (not actually bolted to vehicle)
-
I had a look at that too, and have come to the conclusion that it is a home made jobbie.
The one attachment bolt to the tub ridge capping is a bit of a worry and I cannot see a base workshop allowing that to pass. Certainly guaranteed to deplete your bank balance if ya screaming down the highway at 120 mph ::) and the damn thing suffers metal fatigue...... :'(

Yep, same thing happened to me too, should have know better to buying cheap non genuine made in china stuff. But I thought I would give them a chance on a part that is either hard to find or bloody expensive ome.
But you know when I do get ome parts, I also get all the other nuts, bolts and washers too, sure I have to pay for them but at least there in there.
You will also find a lot of these non genuine parts, are not great fitting.
If you want to be a cheap skate and get cheap stuff, don't expect it to be what you want it to be.
Watch out for the non genuine brake shoe springs, they dot fit, or not with ease.
And forget Brit part stuff it's a joke......

would fit a 130 HCPU?
-
Not sure Juddy, they used to be on the back of the cab chassis patrols, around 2003 models, so you would have to measure one of them up, they used to be very heavy and slow and talk about body roll around corners!.

Actually it's the switch used on the SII Command Recon and the Brit MoD 80" - doesn't Cookey have a MoD 1950 80" he's building back up?

Diggers got at least one on one of his 2a 88" GS's, and seen on several other 2a's of various nomenclature.
Seems they were recycled through the parts bin as necessary.
-
Not having seen what 'Digger' may have in his Land Rover, but it's more likely this type aka "Stove switch" as fitted to my gunbuggy
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/DJM110/BuggyBitz023.jpg
the switch on ebay is what was (as Diana said) fitted to Oz S2 C/R, all it does is turn on/off the rear convoy light situated up under the back of the Land Rover and nothing else, the S2A had the first (real) convoy light switch.
I did send a message to Minikeg about this item as he could have required it for his S2 C/R, anyway I digress cheers Dennis :)
-
Definitely the switch on E-bay, and seems to be fitted from time of disposal.
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/remlr-projects/44900-112-429-photos-promised-vet.html
Maybe just grabbed a spare for filling the hole?
-
Seem's like we have covered this ground before, as I was the 2nd posting in that link about the switch LOL, makes you wonder how on earth it got fitted to a S2A when they would have been fitted with the proper blackout switch, another mystery lost in time, cheers Dennis
-
The first time I saw that type of switch it was on a photo of the ex-MoD 80" used in the Great Train Robbery. The switch was originally mounted on a bracket below the rear cross member where it proved vulnerable to damage. In later 1950 80" they were mounted on the firewall between the steering column and the instrument panel.
I have seen them on early SII command recon and Bobslandies had one on a DBG panel that came from Monty Moore's Parkside Motors. In the 1960s and 1970's Monty Moore was one of the largest dealers of ex-government Land Rovers in Sydney.

That is the switch I'm talking about and was the switch on the sand coloured panel that Dave suggested was a stove switch.

Yep so the one on ebay is real!

Yep so the one on ebay is real!
I believe so, and I also believe that there are two types of the switch lever a fat one and a fine one as in this ebay sale.
Other than that the only difference in this ebay item is that the assembly is rotated by 1/3 of a turn.

It's a civilian non rotating pintle. I bought one of those pintles and a lunette for less than that.
It's the rotating military type that's worth the money.

Yeah heaps of stuff on ebay gumtree etc
I might be getting old but it's starting to feel like the late 80's early 90's when the 2A's and 3's were being auctioned off, all the army stuff was being thrown away (I did it myself!)
Think I might start collecting a few things for 20 years time when I start cllecting and restoring.....lol
Cheers

Not that rare but they are different to the type used on series 1s.
That said you can make a reasonable facsimilie of the Series 1 type by using the Champ back/hub side and WWII Jeep outer rim. You can then sell the outer rim to Jeep owners who want wider rims.

If someone buys the engine for fitting to a Land Rover, I would be happy to swap the truck bell housing and flywheel for the Land Rover bell and flywheel. I'd also be interested in the A.C mount and pulley.
-
Something worth considering however is that 4bd1's vary vehicle to vehicle that they were fitted to with Isuzu relying on vehicle vins to get the right part numbers.
I am told that the Perentie and bushranger build 4BD1's have different valves and valve guides for example, and are not interchangeable. Could be a bit of a conundrum for us in time.

...in 20years I'd like that go-kart body with a electric scooter underneath it to zip around the 'Independent Living Facility'.
-
Hi All
Before rushing in and bidding on these you need to check the year of manufacture. The auction states they are near new and looking at the photos they have plenty of tread which is good but as a buyer you need to know how much life is left in the tyre. Tyres only have a 6 year life span no matter how much tread they have. So a 3 year old tyre is at their half life so with that in mind new XZL's retail for $275 each so the tyres are worth around $130 each an the rims $50 - $80 each second hand. For the money I would rather put it towards a new set of XZL's. Someone might buy these to resell on eBay for a huge profit we will has to wait and see what JB of Coomera does with them.
Cheers
Rod
-
FYI for those who are interested. There is a small oval shape on the sidewall of the tyre that has the date code moulded into it. The code is 4 numbers (3 if they were made in the 90's) with the first 2 being the week of production and the second 2 being the year. As an example if the code is 2704 then the tyre was made in the 27th week of 2004, so early July.
-
Have to agree with rod also. The price of the xzl's is the lowest I have ever seen them , I think they used to be $400 ish,

That trailer is a good setup. I like it, it looks a bit short for me.
The 'floor' looks to be the plywood sold for concrete formwork, its $10 a small 'sheet' 1200 x 600. The rear of my 110 used 4 small sheets: 3 were not touched by the electric saw but the 4th one was cut to make the 4 skinny north-south side pieces. The other 3 go east-west across the rear tub at the level of the folding seats, (not up on the cappings), similar to this: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-uTgP0fiyIMw/UyVYCOGnu4I/AAAAAAAAFxc/7NIuYp3bDFU/w909-h898-no/wayne-unk-arn-rear.jpg
its smooth and sealed already, no sanding. $40 at bunnings all up... the price is right!
-
And how do you get to the items in the trailer, with a lot of difficulty I would think, swag on the ground much better less weight, cheers Dennis :)

It's a beaut.

I just bought a pair of these from this chap on Thursday. The two I got were in excellent condition, possibly unused but a little soiled from being in storage for 20 odd years at an army base. As far as I can gather, they are the old style bins that were used on the early RFSV's, later to be swapped out for larger boxes.
Anyway, the boxes fit a GS perfectly, they even stick out on the side to follow the curve of the tub to maximize internal space. I will have to conjure up some sort of clamping system to hold them in place, but the are a great size for camping gear etc. and are accessed from the outside of the vehicle between the roof hoops. I haven't actually used them yet, but from initial fitting etc. I can highly recommend them. Not sure how many he's got left, so if you're interested, get in quick. A steal at $60 too.

Yep. And as you know you don't have to use this for a light dimmer. It could be used say for a heater fan control and what ever you can think of within the spec. ;)

Hi GGG. Allan from Grays may load things onto vehicles,as they have a forklift on site. The guys out there bend over backwards to help Grays
customers. The only problem I have is Grays double dipping & from my paypal account. The auction ended at 5pm and paypal paid the amount due, about $300 @ 6.10pm friday then Grays took the money again on the Tue.24th.Which then overdrew the paypal a/c. To receive a refund we have to wait 3-5 days. But wait that's not all paypal has also charged me an overdraw fee of ten dollars. Here is another beef, I purchased a power steering box from Silverdale over the phone on the 05/03/2015, It went missing and then was found by AUSPOST at
chullora depot, [apparently damaged or packaging broken] It's now the 26th and still no part or a replacement offered from Silverdale, Will be requesting refund tomorrow! WHO SAID CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS NON EXISTENT IN AUSTRALIA. Keep smiling.
-
Punchie.
The axle was at the school of military engineering not at minto.
The guys at minto aware great.
Adam.
-
Punchie, that was not the impression that I got but you are obviously speaking from experience. Adam is correct about Minto. I have picked up vehicles from there and even the tow truck drivers have commented on it.
I used to work for Post most recently at Chullora. Not a lot was damaged there but it did happen. Packaging needs to be pretty robust as the machine tends not to take prisoners. Don't complain too much. At least they found yours.

Not a bad markup. Must have got some as well from Tim Vibert like I did six weeks ago.
They were $60 each. Which I thought was reasonable.
They are good for secure storage in a GS or FFR though. Just bolt them down where the seats go.
Just ask Hot Rover.

Still cheaper than buying from LRA. But they don't come with the mounting rails

WOW!
-
I bet that drives better without all that metal in it..
Its not that simple either to fit to any other perentie.
-
Without Mr Snorkle, canopy, lh fuel tank, trip unit, winch, and brackets that are on the cappings, and air compressor, and frontend bars, and...
-
The kit should include the extra (inner) rear springs - whoever buys it will need the extra support to carry it, and the original motor car will be far more comfortable without them.
-
I dreg to think the postage costs
-
David has pulled it all off his RFSV to fit a canopy on the back. I doubt the springs and winch are included. I bought the rims off the vehicle. Looking forward to receiving them !! Have a look at his other posts, he has heaps for sale !!
-
Inner springs arent an issue, Std RRC items. Just retaining harware req.
-
Same as the 130 I would have thought
-
If the 130 ones are same PN as RRC, then yes
-
Rear seat would be nice on mine (err yours Barefoot One)
Wonder if it would float across Bass Strait.
Greg Mac.
-
Dont al Perenties have inner springs?
-
*snip*
Its not that simple either to fit to any other perentie.
?? Why??
Step 1. Take one FFR.
Step 2. Go to next auction and take a shed load of reference piccies.
Step 3. Remove tub capping.
Step 4. Install kit capping and then the rest of kit.
At a guestimate there's probably around 300+ rivets .... you's gunna need an air riveter and lots of 3/16" drill bits.
Yup, sure there are a few fiddly bits of bracketry, but it's certainly not brain surgery.
As for rear inner (helper) springs, as far as I know all RFSVs had them.
-
Ok its not rocket science but its not a five minute job either.
The side bins have raised bolts welded to the tub top, the side bins will need the mounting brackets riveting on and a hole drilled into the body work.
The roll cage will also require the same thicker plate and new holes drilling.
Rear wheel carrier, will also require a extra bracket welding to the Helo lifting support, plus a extra enforcing plate behind the body between the bin.
Seat requires the bracing plate's to be removed if fitting to another vehicle.
-
No mate, just Surveillance for the added GVM
-

-
Just checked, and the NSN matches the canopy for the MK4 Inter. Admittedly, its hand-written at the bottom of page 234 of the MK4 RPS that I have, but all of the other manually added info in there has been right so far.
Someone certainly scored a bargain, if its in usable condition. Even if it was rotted or the stitching was going, it would make a good template.
-
I have exactly the same tarp in storage. I'm sure it fits the measurements of my replica tarp bows etc.
There is broad arrow marking etc. I'll see if I can resurrect a pic.

Yes this is "The Paddock" famous and well known to us "series" collectors
the fire tender rolled down the hill and hit a power pole when he was opening the gate one day! it's got a twisted chassis but is fully complete and original.
The trial mud tyres are interesting there is a photo of them during the trials somewhere in the archives
As Mike says, there is a lot more and some rare options for people, last time I counted there are 17 No5 trailers (combo of workshop or std) should be enough for everyone!
Happy bidding
cheers
-
Yes, I always thought there would be a big clearing sale there one day, I didn't expect them to come up on eBay.
It will be interesting to see what else comes up, all of the vehicles / trailers were purchased at auction in the 90s, driven there and then left to rot.
Does anyone recognise the 'radar trailer'?
Has anyone heard what has happened to the owner?
Cheers,
Mike.

Hi Mike,
I do know he went into a home about a year ago, at that stage most things non military where sold by community friends for him and the paddock cleaned up and the rubbished removed etc, but he did not want to sell any of the army gear. one of the ebay descriptions says it's an estate they are selling so I assume he has passed away.
Regards
Scott
-
Thanks for that Scott,
I'm sorry to hear that.
I only met Ian once at an auction when I bought my RAAF No 5 trailer- and I think he bought the other 4!
It certainly will be interesting to see what he had stashed away.
Cheers,
Mike.

Such a shame they were in good condition, then left to rot.
Most will need total rebuilds, big bucks. Looking at whats for sale and been for sale over the last year, these starting price are very unrealistic.
Wayne might think the fire trucks good value, would be worth looking at what the full condition is, that would the one to spend another 15k on.

Nice Combi, but...... check out the second photo ! ;D

That is the collection known as 'the paddock', the L/Rover is a Topographical, it was full of sales documentation (and rubbish that Ian had collected from the roadside in an effort to the area clean) from army auctions many years ago when I saw it in around 2004, there is a couple of different threads about the ebay auction, anything that is there vehicle wise is really going to need a huge amount of work/money to bring them back to life, no kerosene overhauls on any of these vehicles, cheers Dennis :)

Wow, my first 2A was an FFW and the chassis number was 25307312b - only 2 different.
No idea where it is now unfortunately, and I knew nothing about where it came from - 20 years ago!
-
I just had a closer look at that photo, and its not a GS. Front exhaust and the top of the guards looks like its also an FFW, or at least a radio vehicle.
The FFW I had used brackets behind the seats for carrying the gardening tools, and the aerial tuner mounted on top of the guard.
If you look at the top of the guard, towards the rear, there is a square hole where the armoured cover carrying the aerial cable came out from under the guard. The are 2 other holes in front of it where the aerial plug screwed into a holder.
Definately an ex radio bus
-
Looks to be modified for longer range work. Note the rear jerry holders and not bumperettes, placed inboard to clear the can inboard of the tail lights.
-
The jerry can holders come standard on FFW, FFR etc. They were needed to keep engine and/or generator going to charge the batteries.
We did carry a lot of fuel in trailers as well, but trailers can break or left behind in the case of a 'bug out'.... but comms are critical, so hence we carried extra fuel on the vehicle.
By the time the Series 3 came around all the variants got them, but that was because the rover 6 was a thirsty beast.
Cheers.

Thanks for that AGAS5. Lots of info there I didn't know. I'd better start looking at the archives a little harder. :D

Can anyone please tell me what trailer is listed in this ad ? Are they steel or alloy?

Alloy.
You wouldn't want it. It's big. Too big for a Landrover. Too wide. I have one.
Refer attached description.

Thanks for posting that Mick -
we should add it to the library, I couldn't see it there
-
Would that trailer be the right width for the 6x6 then??
-
I can't believe the day these are coming up for sale. RAAF FFT with the 76 sqn panther on the doors is nice. No ARN listing for it, would go well with the raaf ally trailer! Radar trailer is also nice, but I spotted what looks like an ERV ambulance in the background of one photo too. Exciting to see his cousin selling the se vehicles for him.
-
Scary, yes. Correct width for a 6x6.
Was a few attempting to sell at the truck spares place in Minden Qld
a few years ago. Before the Perentie auctions started.
Asking far too much. They had No.5s as well for $2000 without a pintle.

I would like to say no.
There are pics on here somewhere of mine on the back of my 6x6.
I'll see if I can find them.

Good point, I was thinking RAAF because the chassis number is not in the army book of registrations, so I presumed RAAF. but not strictly the case.

Phoenix,
I have commented about this LR in the LRPV thread, the chassis under this LR is listed as being from 113-657 an LRPV. That's assuming that the chassis number in the listing is taken off the chassis and not the plate.
MC
-
Ahh, I ddin't search in the notes field for the chassis when I didn't find it in the chassis field, i'm rusty at this. so 113-657 was originally fitted with chassis 25307310b when it was built as a FFT. It was converted to a LRPV at some stage, and along the way, before or after the LRPV conversion, it was given a new chassis from 177-141. The original chassis must have been repaired along the way, possibly under 177-141 or another vehicle, but never recorded in the ARN Ledgers.
Well, that's how I see it. Doesn't quite help with the actual ARN/Identity though, just where the chassis was originally.

Sad to see Ian selling his SWB. It has a bit more rust than I expected, but it is a sure thing to make big money regardless. They are horrible little vehicles that stuff your back, but people like their short look!! Give me a LWB any day. Ian cherished all of his land rovers and what wonderful heritage he has preserved. A true enthusiast.

Nice one MC ! Perhaps the winch as well ?
I got an answer on the engine:
" Hi
It might have seized Ian was towed home about 4 years ago, and it has not been dealt with since.
I cannot put a crank handle in it to test whether we can turn it over because of the location of the winch
Hope that info helps Thanks for the interest "

Yep never had an oil change in 25 years. Ian kept driving them until they broke down then started driving the next one that would go. Oh except the fire tender that he rolled down the hill into a power pole when opening the gate, it now turns corners without moving the steering wheel. Lol
-
They are more original with the original army oil still in them!!!
-
This sounds more like abusing them, not cherishing them.
-
Each to their own. Most would agree. Appears those on epay now at $1,300 may have cost 2-3 times that much at auction, so taking into account the time value of money, foregone interest or foregone super investments, Ian may have taken a hit for the benefit of other collectors. He has possibly been good to us all in preserving this heritage at his own loss.
-
Looking a lot more 'Tired' in your photos there Mick.
-
Hello Mike, sad to see Ian's cherished collection being broken up. I recall you were friends with the great man and great land rover enthusiast. I might try to pickup that 2a and bulbar and ute top I bought from you when I get a few items I have bought from Ian. Regards.

My old bus from 2/14 LHQMI in 88/89ish.(first photo). It was the worst land rover experience I had, as the A/C unit above the cab made it to top heavy and prone to landing on its side on tracks in SWBTA.It was deemed unsuitable for an armoured unit and returned to supply prior to ex K89.That said I wouldnt mind it now.
-
Ha John, when I was in that same Illustrious Unit at the same time we always thought the M113 Bucket was also unsuitable for an Armoured Corps Unit. Ha.

Greg Mac. Hello fellow Stalag 2/14 survivor.I was also unsuitable in armoured as a tradie, but working out of the wksp rovers/vehicles gave me the love for I have for landys. Also on my wish list is a Tilly for trips to bunnings,an ARVL to go shopping, fitters track to help at home,my old elec bucket(cos that had more luxuries than home) and 114-147 AKA TURTLE(the highway Hilton).........well X-mas is coming ;D ;) :)

Not sure if this would be of use to anyone, being in Hobart and a bit heavy to post interstate.
It appears to be the complete pintle hook from the back of a landy.

That Corio trailer would look good behind my truck. It's also in far better condition than my truck. ;D Pity it's across the Strait.
If you look closely at the original tow hitch, you can see that the top right bolt hole has been damaged. Seems a big chunk is missing like they used the oxy to remove the old bolt and gave it a bit much. Fixable though, unlike that spare. ;D

Notes in the front and rear covers indicate it was owned with 170-407 in the mid-80's.

Well I have the exact same book in much better condition, if anyone wants it you can have it for what I paid for it $90.00, I also have the sister book the 'tech' manual for the F1 it (the book belonged to SASR veh/mounted wing, it has a a duplicate copy of a AF G982E (invoice Veh/Platoon 51 Supp/Batt) dated 21 July 1980, it also cost me $90.00 at the time, so if you want them they are here, cheers Dennis

FYI - BCF have the Engel 40 ltr 'legacy' fridge/freezer on sale at the moment for $1099. It includes the bag as well, but I'd check that it's the camo version first.
Not a bad price :)
-
Hi Pete, cover not incl, they'll add a grey standard cover for a total of $1288 - still not bad. No cam covers thru Bcf apparently.
Tamworth Camping will have a special at AgQuip (also available by phone order) for the next three days only - 40L legacy fridge + camo cover + 12v car cooler + storage containers + fishermans' backpack for $1349 + freight if spplicable - sort of all adds up to similar.
Maybe the camo covers only fit the 40L ?
Regards / Laurie
-
Oops, thanks Laurie, that was a typo. I should have said the 40 ltr engel legacy.... I'll go back and fix that.
A mate of mine just bought one and they ordered the camo bag in for no additional cost. I guess each store might be doing there own twist on the sale just to move stock.
Cheers,
Pete

Thanks Pete - L

Does anyone know what this may have been for originally? Is it from the 1960s or more modern?

They were around in the eighties and nineties.
RA Sigs used to use them for Radio Intercept Listening posts.
Loaded with Radio gear and Air Conditioned. Very comfortable
when in the bush.
Would be a good Gun Safe or Reloading Room.
Bit expensive.
Greg Mac.
-
It's a general use shelter, not for comms gear..... there's no cable patch panel (aka Signal Entry Panel), power inlet or aircon.
A nice bit of kit though :)

No Kms driven since disposed of to the seller?
No surprise at all if they lived in Newtown, they probably spent six hours finding a parking spot large enough for it then vowed never to drive it again.

No more mark ups from 3rd party resellers, although I do understand you can do better on the Ebay prices still by contacting Robco direct.

Thanks for that. That's the exact model I saw at one of our social days down here.
I'll have a chat with the seller, but by the time I add freight to Tasmania to it, I think it would be a bit too much.

true, freights the killer, I did see a while the full trailer set up with two units and the changeover as used for Medport, but it looked in a poor state, its not o gumtree now, goodluck, imagine they will be hard to come by
