Hi I just checked the BBB for the chassis details, our online dbase is correct.

Is 174300 still in one piece or is it dismantled?

It certainly does have some history. It is in a date range which we (happily) have plenty of docs at the AWM.

AWM document R553/5/8/1 indicates a transport record to South Vietnam, left Australia on HMAS Sydney with 6RAR, 08 May 1969 when it was pretty fresh out of the CKD crates from the voyage out from England:

HMAS Sydney "Ships Proceedings"...

05may1969 0825 commence passage to Townsville from Sydney.

08may1969 0500 arrive Townsville and embark 6RAR troops and equipment.

08may1960 1630 commence passage to Vung Tau.

19may1969 0655 arrive Vung Tau and disembark 6RAR troops. Embark 4RAR troops.

19may1969 1225 commence passage to Brisbane.

30may1969 0828 arrive Brisbane and disembark 4RAR troops. RAN crew participation in Parade and March Past in Brisbane streets employing Sydney's RAN Band.

30may1969 1225 commence passage to Sydney.

31may1969 1530 arrive Garden Is, Sydney.

jun - jul - aug - sep - oct 1969 multiple Industrial troubles at dry-docks. (when commies in Sydney unions helped their comrades in Hanoi).

I include a photo showing 174336 which may have shared the deck with 174300.

By the way, did you buy a Perentie 6x6 last year? Are you on the land down Junee area? I helped out John S. with a fanbelt at the first big Hume Hwy rest stop south of Sydney. Is the LR world that small?

Thx Mike. If this Landy is still going it could be due to the Base Workshop rebuilds. Do you cover the workshops in one of your books or articles? There must be archive photos of all that work and what came of that policy. Was there a similar Navy or Air Force policy that the Army copied? Or was it a new idea I wonder.

Hi Carzee,

I am aware that there was a certain degree of reducing Land Rovers that were BER to components (RTC) during the early to mid 1970s to support the 'AHQ Repair Programme'. I have no data or references on the policy decisions that led to that programme, or details of the programme itself. I've tried several searches on Recordsearch over the years, but no file titles pop up that look like they are in any way related, so the details remain elusive, at least to me.

Thx Mike. As for the RTC idea... I assume fleets and contract companies did the same. And railways I suppose. And Mr Denning probably did it too. I know for sure the SMHE mechanics did it. A Snowy project LR could do a major part but be back in service pretty quickly because parts were rebuilt, held as spares, and ready to swap in.
