When I did mine I got this special putty/sealant stuff that comes as a long strip, looks identical to blu-tac but I'm buggered if I can find where I got it.

What you need is

Glazing seal is a flat section preformed butyl strip. It deforms under moderate pressure and has appreciable surface tack and recovery.

This is used when glazing fixed pieces of glass on any door such as the front door tops or rear doors. This is put in between the glass and the metal door to provide a waterproof seal. This is the proper material to use when glazing doors and is the same material that Land Rover uses at the factory.

a 12M roll, plenty to do lots of doors!

Simply un-roll, cut to length, apply to door and then remove the backing strip. Place glass onto seal, squeezing the glass around the edges to ensure a tight fit then fix the alluminium supportng strips back into place onto the door.Trim any excess sealant strip using a sharp knife. Job done!
