ISUZU 4DB1 engine - lustre of black painted parts
« on: December 02, 2014, 11:00:06 PM »
I’m at the stage of painting the Isuzu engine.

Can I please have conformation on the lustre of blacks used before I paint?

Sump, rocker cover, inspection cover (exhaust side-large one/beside alloy breather cover).crankcase breather pipe, front engine cover– full gloss?

Was the remainder painted a semi sheen/low gloss or was it a gloss?

It’s hard to tell even in the sheltered areas after all the chemical washes over the years…

Are there any new ADF  ISUZU 4DB1 engine photos existing ?

Thanks Phil

Semi or full gloss is the go, use an engine enamel. They actually look good with a new coat of paint.

¿que?

I can see the image in my post and the quoted reply and I also saw it at work where I posted the image from.

Maybe its not my computer.

Here is the image as an attachment.

(we don't have the logbook, but from the dates on all the filters it was a replacement engine in February 2014 (and front end as well as other parts))

Thanks Diana All good

I'll share an image when I've done mine. Just waiting for the pickle to dry on the block. About another three days before I can paint...

I guess it depends what you want your engine to look like; rebuilt or not rebuilt. Diana's engine is rebuilt - it's easy to tell as everything is black. 4BD1s pre-rebuild have bare aluminium thermostat covers, inlet manifolds, injection pumps, fuel filter brackets, heater pipes, fuel pipes, exhaust heat shield etc.

I think the rebuild process must have included a step to spray absolutely everything gloss black, the texture of what was sprayed determined it's lustre.

Then again, not all army engines were just black either  :D  (This photo also shows what a non-rebuilt 4BD1 looks like if you imagine a black acoustic cover)

the rebuilt ones are often all black.  helps to identify a rebuild too ;)

Coincidentally I was sent some photos the other day.  Yes, they will make their way onto remlr in time.

Maybe there is no oil in the fresh engine?
Must admit a properly machined pice of cast iron or aluminium does work for me.

Until they get hot ;D, say silastic anybody...   ;) No they have come a long way.

I’m getting flash backs of my sister-in-law’s Holden TF Gemini with a 4 cylinder Isuzu cast iron block and alloy head. I changed head gaskets in that as often as underpants until I found a good gasket brand.

I was talking about the whole workshop... You could eat off that floor!  :o
