Thats a credit to you and your team. Looks great.

Can i ask about the soft top... obviously from the Defenders. It looks to fit exactly, so i must catch up on the info: who shortens them an inch, who mods them, whats the story?

In regards to the rear cross member, I cant see where, if at all, it has been grafted on. please refer to the atatched photos of the rear.
also see the attatched photo of the spliced on front dumb iron, it is the only chassis extension/addition I can see that may have been grafted on.
If you compare the black S3 chassis section from the front garden (doesn't everyone have one?) this is the only real difference.

For the canvas, yes it is a 110 canvas, I was given it when i bought a complete station wagon for the back door, all for $200 delivered!
The only modification I did to it was slipped a length of 20mm plastic conduit over the leading strip and cable tied it to the prongs on the windscreen top, if anything it is too short in length over the tail section in comparison to the sides at the back.

Of note there has been some corner damage in the past, can see a tell tale line of rivits and a plate fitted in on the top of the passenger side back panel.

G'day M

What you appear to have is a stock S3 military chassis. The S3 chassis has the central spine weld down the full length top and bottom. S2/S2A chassis has corner welds. The dumb iron on your vehicle is standard military modification. Same as on all of my ex army Land Rovers.

Does your Landy still retain a 2.25ltr motor? If so, where are the front cross members positioned. The S3 chassis is different from the S2/S2A chassis in that the crossmembers are positioned to accomodate the six cylinder motor. It may be worth getting under your Landy and checking the location of the crossmembers. Check against a S2/S2A chassis if you have one close by. Check it against your S3 civvy chassis as well. Take some pix and post up.

Another thing to think about. Your Landy was released from the army in February 1990. This represents a late release date for a S2A. The S3s were at the same time, being superceded by the Perenties. It may be that 178-365 has had a late service chassis exchange. Maybe the army only had S3 chassis in stock. The army could have modified the crossmembers during the change over. If so, you should be able to see the cut and grinder marks where the six cylinder crossmembers have been removed and repositioned.

Something to ponder during the festive season  ;)

Thanks Tommy,

I have spent more time under this truck today than in the last 12 months!

I have managed to get a couple of photos of the underside, definitely looks modified, thank you for your interest, I am much appreciative of all the input from all.

G'day M

There does appear to be some cutting going on under your Landy.

Next step would be to look over this drawing and compare measurements. Remember that the measurements are in inches/imperial. They should match up if modified to S2A configuration.

http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/AcrobatFiles/109CoachbuildersDrawingLARGE.jpg  (Click on the plan to enlarge).

Length from the rear of front (steering relay) crossmember to rear of next (2nd) crossmember should be 35.75 inches according to the diagram.

Did manage to get to Melrose S.A. for the land rover register weekend, Had a great weekend.
Finished it off with a trip to the Boolaroo Steam and traction show with a mate.
We didnt have the only 4 wheel drives on display, the locals had their Caldwell Vale tractor out for a run.

Sorry guys I've missed this thread altogether till tonight.  The vehicle does look great.

As for the chassis, Tommy's comment seems to ring true, the SIIA and very early SIII chassis had their side rails made by welding four plates together to make a box, the later SIII had side rails that were made of two pressed "C" sections pressed together and welded on top and bottom in a clamshell design.  From the photos I cant see if the clamshell proceeds all the way to the front dumb irons but if it does, what you may have is a civilian SIII "1 Ton" chassis which are clamshell design and have the front dumb irons as the civilian and SIIa military and civilian rear cross member and not the modified SIII military chassis.

It is possible that it is a replacement 1 Ton chassis fitted as spare part, or something more nefarious like a re-birthed chassis.

My South African assembled SIIB has a clamshell design chassis as do all the late ex-SADF "332" prefix SIIB

Of note there has been some corner damage in the past, can see a tell tale line of rivits and a plate fitted in on the top of the passenger side back panel.

The line of rivits could of been placed in service. There was an EMEI at the time as the spot welds would fail.

And Gday to you too, sorry about the late reply, too much work not enough play.
Nice looking truck you have there, still have to track down a bridge plate or two one day. I don't notice it missing on mine until I saw yours!

I finally tracked down a bridge plate, unfortunately it come off of a sacrificed gs I recovered from Williamstown which will be used to finish off my workshop "Piston Broke" and my mates 109 gs with a rusted out chassis.
