trans/transfer oil
« on: August 25, 2018, 12:40:56 PM »
What is the consensus on gear oil with ep rating gl5. Army spec is engine oil , looking into this further apparently it is because the ep additives react with brass/bronse bushes. I would have thought all trannies would have similar components and suffer same issues ,I have always ran gl5 in landcruisers for years and have had no problems. Can anyone enlighten me. Dave.

There are some on here who have had experience with using oils other than those recommended in the published manuals.
I can only advise "Stick to those recommendations."

On the up side, I know I won't have to worry about my gearbox and transfer case for some years.

Here we go again - dont make it harder than it needs to be - dont try reinventing the wheel.

Engine oil works fine and what is recommended - stick with it.

Not trying to reinvent anything, just would like to find if there is a real issue here because engine oil is engineered to function and protect an engine gear oil a transmission.

Hi
This subject has been done to death. Do a search for oil for a LT95 on this forum and AULRO as well as Google and you will find all the reasons why you don't put gear oil in a LT95.

Well, I'm convinced. (That was my logic quite a number of years ago.)
Report back and let us know how you go.

I think, from memory, my transfer case lasted one or two thousand kilometres running on gear oil.

Do yourself a favour and stick with the recommended one which is engine oil. There are reasons why. Use gear oil and you will find out.

My understanding of this and please correct me if someone is more informed, the gl number (from 1-6 ) is the level of ep (extreme pressure) additives added to the oil. The problem lies with these additives reacting to the bronze and brass bushes causing a breakdown in the integrity of the metal over time. This was identified with much older vehicles and gl1 was recommended having the leased ep additives. How much and long this break down occurs seems to be still debated on the internet. I owned a 81 s111 3.9 in the early 80s, I wasn't a where of the problem back then and sure the manual specified gear oil for the lt95, I had it for some years saw a lot of australia had no problems sold it in the early 90s. This not to say the next owner may have had problems.

Of all the available alternatives, the advice given above by Bearman is the simplest and definitely on the ball.

If you had a (S3) Stage 1 with the LT95, there were other alternatives but gearbox oil was not one of them.

If you have to ask, the given advice is to accept the KISS principle.

In addition, suitable engine oil is a lot cheaper than suitable gear oil which also tends to be heavier than engine oil, so the oil pump has trouble moving it around particularly when cold.
