2a thermostat replacement issue.
« on: January 04, 2016, 01:10:38 PM »
Small problem.
Took out my old thermostat which I believe to have been sticking.
Bought a new 74d.
Put the new one in but the top housing will not fit onto it. The new thermostat is bigger than the older one.
Thoughts?

I replaced the thermostat on mine recently without any problems. Unfortunately I am not near home so can't check the part number but I went to out local Land Rover repairer and simply asked for a thermostat for a 2A 2.25 four cylinder which he supplied and it was fine.

Sadly I stripped one of the threads and had to modify it to fit studs to the block but that is another story...

Can we see a photo of your thermostat housing?

How corroded is the inside of the top water outlet that goes on top of the thermostat?

If you have a look at the RPS, it shows 2 different thermostats, one for up to engine suffix C , and the other one on from there. So it is possible you have an early engine and a late thermostat or vice versa. That is probably not the issue though, as you have a 2 later thermostats in the photo. The early one was a bellows type that looks quite different.

They are different though, the original one has a shoulder on it that the replacement one does not have.

At least you got the 3 bolts out of the housing without shearing them!

The top cover had a bit of build up inside it so I gave it a clean. The new thermostat is still a lot bigger without that taper.
So I went down to super cheap auto and bought an 82d tridon. Fitted in no worries.

Put it all back together beautifully. Topped up the coolant.

Looked at the front housing bolt on the top cover. Looked a little proud I thought, must have not quite tightened it.
Gave it a bit more. Over toqued it and snapped it.

F@%k! Then walked away.

I feel your pain.

Probably there are those who have sheared one of these, and those who will have it happen in the future.... :)

On the bright side, you are getting really good at this job, and the 2A coolant is easy to drain.

Decided to do some riveting on one of the workshop trailers. Repair some hooks.

Broke my riveting tool. Snapped the handle.

You are having a bad day! Know what that is like - just know that it will all come good in the end and will eventually be worth it...

Good luck.
