Perentie Turbo Upgrade
« on: November 27, 2013, 09:20:12 PM »
What parts are required for a 4x4 turbo upgrade?

Would I require a new manifold as well?

And what would a estimated cost be?

Don't know, some members on AULRO have done it.  I do believe you have to get a new manifold.  not sure on the rest (other than the turbo of course)

why not check out a 6x6 for an idea.  All the gears already on it.

Exhaust manifold, turbo, oil lines, EGT probe, new dump pipe, mod the air filter housing, intercooler if desired, oil breather, a few other bits and pieces... read up on AULRO where all the Isuzu enthusiasts gather...
Would be smart to do a rear disc brake conversion first though I reckon.

The 6x6 is very different to the 4x4 had a look at one last week.

Thanks, can see why they charge 4k to do one.

I think he means that the 6x6 is Factory Turbo, 4x4 is not. They're not that very different.

A turbo'd 4x4 tends to end up looking very much like the 6x6 engine when done right. By comparing to the 6x6 engine, you will see where lines for oil and water are plumbed around the turbo. The turbo manifold from the 4BD1T is a good start to fitting a turbo to the 4BD1.

G'day
New to the forum so thanks for all the great info and discussion. I have a 1990 perentie 110 w an Isuzu 4BD1 3.9L NA diesel. It's been turned into a 4BD1T with the addition of an Isuzu T exhaust manifold and Isuzu NOS turbine bought on eBay. Manifold cost $60. Turbine cost $250.  Went to TurboGlide in Wollongong. They put it all together in 3days including new exhaust etc. They can source the correct manifold and turbine - probably easier that way. There are two different manifold types. Put her on the dyno. 40% more torque. Runs beautifully. They did a brilliant job. Cost of turbocharging the existing engine less than exchange and existing engine was a known quantity and a goodie.
Next project will be an intercooler. She now has a winch, getting new canvas, put 6 seatbelts in the back - used front Hilux ones as they have the required length. Bars at seated head height with tabs welded on to take the seatbelt pulleys and brackets w reinforcing plates under tub to take inertial reels and seatbelt buckles. Altogether the best and most fun vehicle I've ever owned. Oh yes. And the bonnet tools - Cyclone brand fit correctly - local hare are had them. Sprayed to match bonnet camo pattern. Also engine immobiliser and landie spotlights as well as some cages around the lights and air intake covers. Kids love it. Wife hates it. Happy days. Great for the beach with the canvas rolled up. Great for camping. No 5 trailer makes Tip runs a breeze.
So in summary. Turbocharging was relatively painless did a fair bit of research, but well worth it from my point of view.

Cheers.
Adam

Thanks for that Adam.  Your info will be gobbled up by some on here I'd say.

Hey all,
I've noticed a few people saying that the stock 6x6 turbo install would be a good example to follow for a 4x4 install.
Has anyone actually done the 4x4 install using the 6x6 parts?
I'm not sure that the 6x6 air pipe that crosses over the rocker cover will fit under the 4x4 bonnet?

Cheers,  Daryl.

I have the same turbo and a standard Isuzu truck turbo manifold and when I mentioned using this turbo on my civilian 6x6 KLR suggested it was not worth the effort and I would not be happy with the result.  They went on to say the standard turbo is not suited to our 4X4 and 6x6 needs, so I would be better off if I sold the turbo I have and use one of theirs.

I didn't get the impresion that it was all a sales pitch, but they are in business.

What I do know is that they have already upgraded the turbos on a number of Perentie 6x6.

I believe the stock crossover pipe will fit. Mine is not a stock 4BD1T, but has a similar crossover pipe that fits even with the under-bonnet insulation.

As Diana says, the stock 4BD1T turbos are both pretty poor matches to the 4BD1, there are vastly better choices out there. An N/A 4BD1 in a Perentie puts about 50hp to the wheels; a stock 4BD1T puts out around 70hp to the wheels and the KLR setup puts out 110hp at the wheels - I think that speaks for itself.
