Definitely a good idea Ross. I did that with my 6by. Put a filter just after the twin tank switch. So the fuel now goes thru the sedimenters first, then the electric changeover switch, the new filter, then that little strainer and the standard filter before getting to the pump. I have extended the change out time for the original one on the engine now. Away from home atm but can post up a photo on Monday if you want.

Tona is right on the money in the cause of this. This thing spreads by spores which are apparently small enough to pass through filters and set up a colony down stream of the filter. I had the problem 25 years ago and the stuff would even form a skin an the gauze dome filters in the AC lift pumps, blocking them completely. I phoned the oil company and guess what ...it was all my fault! I had water in my tanks etc etc. I got hold of some of the test kits that the aviation industry uses and no water. Everything was steamed out and inhibitor added to the refill fuel and the oil mob were given the flick. The problem has never come back. The company concerned was one that got defence contracts on a regular basis. The inhibitor was probably the killer, I can't remember its name but the supplier said to treat it with respect it is toxic! I used it for about a year, but it did do the job, and the fuel supplier's product must have been clean otherwise the problem would have re-appeared. That's two bob's worth!

I'm looking at putting in an in-line filter, but there is not much space between the ends of the metal pipes - 12cm by my measuring!
I'm looking at remote mounting something somewhere, but no sure where yet.
Will visit supercrap and have a look at what filters are available that might work.

After looking and looking at the range of fuel filters, and opening every box and measuring each one, I settled on a Ryco Z198 filter. The filter is a touch under 10cm across, so it worked out well.
After putting the rubber hose on each side of it, I cut the overall assembly to the same length as the piece of fuel hose I removed and she went straight in.
I then decided to check the "mongrel little fuel filter" and it had just a touch of grot in it, absolutely nothing to worry about.
And just because you have taken it out and replaced it once, IT DOES NOT GET ANY EASIER TO REMOVE AND REPLACE A SECOND TIME!!!!!! >:(

For me the trick to removing the fuel strainer under the fuel lift pump was to use a 17mm ratchet spanner, I struggled with space with a normal ring spanner, so I borrowed a ratchet ring spanner which made it a doddle. removed cleaned refitted in 10 mins.
I must buy a set of these ratchet spanners, as it seems LR designers tried to ensure there was as little room as possible around everything you want to take off, and ratchet spanners allow you to ratchet small amounts and not have to remove the ring each time you have hit the end of travel.

Hey guys,

I dont post often, but here goes:
I broke my 30yo little plastic filter the last time I was cleaning it (a chunk got caught and I snapped the head off the filter) so was looking for another one.  Through calling a few of my contacts:
- the local Isuzu med/heavy duty truck guys couldnt find that 515 p/n (not sure why...)
- my contact at Isuzu headquarters (Los Angeles) noticed they used these engines in semi-truck refrigerated trailers so recommended calling Thermo King
- the Thermo King folks were able to find the filter / screen and I didnt have to buy the banjo bolt

For reference, the Thermo King p/n is 112854.  Its a nice, brass filter and looks *much* more solid than the original plastic ones (I'll try to remember to take a pic later today)

I'm in the US, so not sure if you guys will run into the same problem / find the same benefit from cross referencing a Thermo King part, but thought I'd pass this along

There is obviously a minor spill of what is in the fuel line and it may need bleeding - the most useful tip I can give is to stuff rag in the engine mount so that you can easily recover anything you would otherwise drop into it.
