KLR Power Steering
« on: December 07, 2014, 10:09:48 PM »
Bought a PAS kit from KLR and fitted it this weekend, and the results are fantastic. I must say the service from Brad at KLR is first class.

Everything is in the Kit and comes with excellent instructions.

Took me just on 4 hours from start to finish and I wasn't trying to race the job, just took my time and enjoyed doing the job.

Certainly makes steering like a modern vehicle, but for me the most important thing is it sits true on the road and doesn't feel like it wants to wander and no understeering feeling going into corners anymore.

Next a turbo, then....

Any questions please ask,

Regards
Scott

Is it the Isuzu pump that attaches to the timing case on the drivers side of the crank?

I'm doing a DIY power steering on my Perentie and wouldn't mind a photo of the pump in situ, if it is not too much trouble?

There are 4 (I think) different Isuzu power steering pumps that fit the 4BD1 out of different trucks, but yes - it's one of them.

Yes, that's it, fits where there is a blanking plate with 3 bolts directly below the fuel pump.

I'll take some photos tonight

Yeah man, those are great. Thanks for that.

Was the pump easy to install? Did you have to drain the oil or was a cold engine good enough?

Hi, only a small amount of oil leaked out ( about 100ml) engine cool but not cold. The gears need to mesh and the rubber "O" ring needs a little lubrication then it just slid in easier than I thought.

Might be a silly question, but what's the steering like when the while the car isn't running? Is it still mobile or does it become a brick?

The ones that become unsteerable are the ram type setups.  In the Disco/Defender PAS boxes, the steering becomes heavy but remain steerable.  The fact that the PAS pump is gear driven from within the timing case means that unlike belt driven ones you are far less likely to have complete loss of the pump or assistance unless you blow a pipe.

I recently installed power steering but it doesn't work all the time, you seem to have to turn it to full lock to get it to load up the pump to get it to work. Any ideas?

Is there fluid in it? Maybe there is air in the system and it needs a bleed and top up?

Is your pump the isuzu timing gear one?
