oil leak around the sump of RFSV
« on: January 02, 2017, 12:49:15 PM »
just climbed underneath my RFSV and found a fair bit of oil on the bottom of the sump. Actual drops on the drain plug and sump bolts. Does not seem to be travelling from the front of the motor. Concentrates on the passenger side spreading out across all the sump towards the start of  bottom of the bell housing.
A recent development.
Vehicle does not move that much. Sump gasket gone hard and failing??? Any advice?
Tom

Hi Tom, just check if oil drops are collecting underneath the oil filter housing (driver side), if so it can be the "O" rings which seal the oil line that goes behind the filter to the oil cooler.

I'll relate all the gen on that for you if that is the situation  :)

If it is seeping on the pass side it could be the alternator oil line.

just climbed under again and stared it it a bit more it is not coming from the passenger side rather it is coming from the drivers side and blowing around the motor i think. not the oil filter just had a turbo fitted might be a small leak there on the oil pick up from the oil filter not sure. will investigate further.
Do sump gaskets just fail?

G'day again

Our local bearing & tool shops have them - should be readily available  :)

BUT, front diff on my RFSV has a in hex 9/16" plug (not metric - not square) !

from memory I think the rear diff was 1/2" square - if so just use your socket drive and extension  :)

Anything can fail  :)

If it is related to the turbo fitment I would take it to the person who did the job.

If it is the oil cooler line "O" rings the procedure will be simpler if you first remove the filter. Take care that the replacement "O" rings that you buy are not too thick, or they will stuff up long term sealing. The oil line has 4 bolts on 2 flanges, 1 flange on the oil cooler and 1 flange on the filter housing.

thanks heaps :)
Going to do a wipe down and take for a drive and check again to confirm where its coming from but the turbo oil pick up line looks like the chief suspect

That's good if you can track down where it's coming from

I think I have solved the mystery. Nothing to  do with the turbo. When I cleaned the sump down and took it for a run and then checked on it there was oil around the sump bolts. Pulled a couple out and found there was little sealant around the bolts. The bolts are an odd sort of bolt with a rubber seal on the shaft which when bolted up are supposed to crush and expand within the sump gasket forming a seal. One of the bolts was missing the rubber seal altogether just relying on some sealant to do the job. Must have been a friday job for some digger or apprentice. I am amazed it lasted as long as it did without leaking. Anyway resealed all the bolts and a new one with the rubber seal arrives tomorrow. I hope this fixes it otherwise i suspect i will have to replace the entire sump gasket.
