Hi all, I'm about to tidy the paintwork on my '89 GS bought last year via the AFM auctions. I've read the paint guide on this site and purchased the three protec colours recommended. My concern is that my perentie and most I see displayed on the AFM auction site have four colours: an olive green (same as the protec (camolfage green 342-1166-23) which is the base colour for the whole vehicle which is then oversprayed with the black (protec camo black 342-7165-23) , tan (protec camo brown 342-5265-23) AND another green which isnt olive but more grey green. It looks to me like my vehicle was factory delivered in olive green (camo green) then camoflaged using the camo black, camo brown AND the different green colour. I have also noted that some pic's I've seen of camoflaged vehicle DO use the three protec colours only BUT a number seem to have used this different green. I called protec and they could'nt help with the colour. Can anyone suggest a colour match I could use for my touch up job or maybe a comment on this? Thanks, David

Can you put up a photo ?
-
Yes, there is a green that is lighter in shade than the orig olive colour. The orig OG can be seen on the underside of the bonnet or inside the vehicle and sometimes externally in areas where it hasn't been covered by the later coats.
I have no idea which of the two greens is matched by the protec green you have purchased.
Why not just try some to see what shade it is? :)
It could be the green colour currently used externally as the orig OG isn't used.

Hi All
There is only one green if you read http://remlr.com/forum/index.php?topic=3345.msg33280#msg33280 (http://remlr.com/forum/index.php?topic=3345.msg33280#msg33280) I have explained it all. And when painting camo always start with the lightest colour which is tan and then work to the darkest colour which is black.
Cheers

Sorry Rod, but there is more than one green, as I have 2 greens on my 6x6, the olive drab and a lighter green which is on the bonnet and mudguards. I have wondered if it was due to fading but then I would have expected the tray to have faded also.
I have used some Protec pressure pack as a touch up paint, it matches the tray perfectly but not the cab.
OK got it now, cab is NIRR paint which has faded,,tray is std. paint which doesn't fade

Or as Kermit says "it's not easy being Green" apparently.
-
Ah, Pete, you have an air defence fire unit too. One of seventeen I believe.
I understand what you are saying, but, I don't think the trays were original fitment to the chassis, at least mine isn't. The GM120 should tell.
Yep, mine appears to have a different shade of green but I do believe that is due to fading. Looking at my other vehicles and trailer, it appears the army used about ten shades of green, or the paint fades.

Mine was Tenixed in 2008 and the body fitted shortly after and then put into storage at Puckapunyal, covering 4700km in the next 6 years. Must have been storage in the sun though because parking lights disintegrated when touched and then there's the paint fade.

Hi All
As I have stated numerous times there is only one shade of green Federal standard 34088 for the unbelievers amongst us go to http://www.apas.gov.au/SpecList.asp (http://www.apas.gov.au/SpecList.asp) then come back and tell me I am wrong. Different paint types and manufactures products will behave differently and fade differently to each other. And if you are still not convinced take the number stated above to a paint supplier and see what they say, mine told me it was on the Valspa system as camo green ADF as the user.
Cheers

Pete, mine was mostly at 16AD Regiment. Probably at Woodside I suspect. Then 16ALR. (was that what 16AD became?) Before that it was at AWMA Tech support.
I got it at about 73,000 km. At 33,081km it had a tray swap with 50693 in May 07. At 33,224km it had 350hrs of work done to it in one service! Cumulative service time of 650 hrs. I suspect it was put in the drink at some stage considering the amount of silt that I found in the heaterr core.
Oh it was nearly sent to Timor.

Thanks for the comments chaps. Very helpful.
I think I'll try and use some lanolin on the green to restore the colour. However, patch painting rusted or chipped areas is going to be tricky if I have to spray fresh green over faded green....

Hi Rod,
Thanks so much for the green Federal standard number, this means I can actually get the correct paint in the US. Do you happen to know the US Federal Standard Paint code for the Black and Tan and Pilibara Red in Perentie AusCam?
I can't find those other colors in your link

On the front page of the REMLR webiste there is a Restoration Information tab, under this there is a Colour scheme tab.
It says
Camouflage Pilbara Brown - 342-5239
I went to Protec Welshpool yesterday they have Camouflage Green - 342-1166 & Camouflage Brown (Auscam Tan) - 342-5265 available in cans for about $14 sent from Eastern States, the Pilbara Brown they say they dont do in a can and the mix is gloss not lustreless as the other two are. The guy who mixed it put in a mixer to dull it down for me but said it is not lustreless and wont match the sheen on the other two, I haven't tried it yet, and as it was mixed it was twice the price as pre-canned. I noted on my RFSV the Pilbara brown has a slightly more gloss finish so maybe they did the same. If buying not in a spraycan they can probably match the sheen on all 3. (Just noticed you are in USA, Australian price and WA store wont help a lot)
-
Hi David,
There are a number of protect paint outlets that will match the colour without too much trouble. I'd checkout Protec to see if they can give details of a supplier near you.
I had 4 unusual colours I had to match on the LRPV and they did a great job.
Cheers ,
Mick

Hey David,
I'd get onto Protec, I have a 4ltr tin of the Pilbara Brown. They had it in stock at the Protec supplier here in Melbourne.
I know it's not much help but it is available.
Cheers,
Mick

Thanks guys, I did actually find the info for the paint code in Federal Standard for each of the colors, i found it in that document, which means I can get it mixed locally, For Future Reference:
Camo Green: Federal Standard 34088
Camo Brown: Federal Standard 30219
Camo Black: Federal Standard 37038
(RFSV only) Piibara Red: Federal Standard 30109

It was all in the documents that I posted some time ago. You have to find the documents that relate to the painting vehicles and equipment and then read them, and amongst all the paint specifications you will find the colour standards which relate back to the federal standard. The tan and black are actually the same colours that are used on the Blackhawk and Kiowa fleet the tan was also used on the F111 and Iriqouis fleet as well. I hope now we can put this issue to bed now.
Cheers

I probably wasn't clear. Protec Perth (they only have one office but a few authorised dealers) sell all the camo paints in the right paint code, however they come with different sheens. You can get the paints with exactly the same colour in several sheens including lustreless or gloss.
I wanted spray cans in the three colours with the Lustreless finish which has a 23 after the standard paint code (eg 342 1166 23).
Protec Perth had these for most camo colours but said they cant do the Pilbara Brown in Lustreless, only in a gloss with an agent added to dull the gloss down, and mixed it into a spraycan on the spot. They said the sheen would be a close match to lustreless but not exact as they didnt have the lustreless paint mix recipe in Perth for this colour.
It is very likely Protec offices in other states may be able to provide the Lustreless Pilbara Brown in a spraycan as the premixed spraycans are sent from the east but WA office said they couldn't.

Protec in Gillman SA is where all the ADF paint is manufactured and then sent out to distributors from there, if ever chasing difficult stuff maybe contact them first and then get it shipped to the local guy

I ordered protec cans from protec in somerton (Melbourne) they had 2 of 3 colours available so I back ordered.. They never called me back but i never chased it up either. Not ready to paint it just yet anyway..
Try the somerton store. They may be able to road freight them to you

Please note the Camouflage Pilbara Brown - 342-5239 shown in the "Australian Army Vehicle Colour Schemes and Paint" section does not match the Red on my Perentie. I got some from Protec and the colour provided is very similar to the Camouflage Brown (Auscam Tan) - 342-5265. Protec WA advised the paint code 342-5239 is incorrect for this colour. Be careful if you intend to buy this paint using the code 342-5239.

don't want to piss anyone off, but this one was touched up with standard pink primer before going on a task.

I wondered about that, when trying to get the colour from protec I even mentioned it looks like a red oxide primer paint, how close is the match can you easily see they are different colours? Do you know the make of primer?
-
Prime It? Or is that too brown?
