Wanted - Busmann fuses (Brit MoD)
« on: August 08, 2013, 12:36:13 PM »
I need a couple of Busmann fuses for for a Clansman system power distribution box.  It seems they are specific to the British Ministry of Defence and sold in lots of 10s or 20s for half a house each pack.

Anyone have some or know of a source?

I only have a single one and need to have three as a minimum (before I blow any).

Cooper Bussmann produce thousands of fuses.. might need to narrow it down to have a hope of finding the right ones.. pics? model number? ampage?

Can do that at home tonight, I looked up the (partial NSN) number on the fuse under the manufacturer "Brush" and it came in about 5 different amperages, I needed to buy in bags of IIRC 20 and had to complete a MoD declaration for the intended purpose prior to the sale being completed.

That scared me off a little.

It was another friend who called them Bussman fuses with the comment "Ah the old bussman fuses, lots of luck"!

Diana,
I still use different busmann fuses for all of our older electrical control systems here in SA.
The biggest issue will be to match up is to give the relevent diameters and length, dpepnding on style and its rating, there are a few different lables around, and coming up with a match shouldnt be too hard.
if you can post a photo, and or dimensions you should be able to cross reference through Farnell or RS componants, I usually source through MM electrical Wholesalers.

I'll mic them up when I get home.  1 is sitting on the kitchen bench.  They look like a small cartridge fuse but without the tag at the end.  If they are too exxy I was going to get someone to turn up some caps to fit over glass fuses.

Hi,

Is this what you want?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pack-15-Clansman-Fuse-Cartridge-3-Amp-10-Amp-15-Amp-/111137774809?pt=UK_Collectables_Militaria_LE&hash=item19e053dcd9

The ones on the left of the pic have the smae number as the one I just took out of my Clansman dist box.

Made by English Electric.

Hi Peter

Yup thats them!  :)

I have a 3 Amp one blown and a 10 Amp one that works.

Do you have any idea which one should be used with which bit of kit?

Have a project ATM to interface something like an Icom or Kenwood UHF CB into the Clansman harness so need at least two 24V outlets, one for the IBHA -> DCCU -> PRC352 and another one for the IB2/IB3 harness box.

Do you know if the IBHA can be used for the interface just by using a patch lead from the Icom/Kenwood to the PRC port of the IBHA?

Hi Diana,

Mine are all 15A and I am not sure if they were different values for different radios.

You should be able to make a patch cable from PRC socket to Kenwood etc.
Link below has wiring info if you don't already have it.
http://www.g0ozs.org/clansman/boxes.shtml

Assuming you want to "drive" your kenwood etc from vehicle harness.

Mic input is balanced so you may need an small 1:1 audio transformer in your adapter cable.
I think PTT is just an earth out and speaker is unbalanced.
This may be useful.
http://www.vmarsmanuals.co.uk/newsletter_articles/clansman_interface.pdf

The IBHA I think could be used in place of the interface box 2 radio (it might be the same thing)

Have fun and I hope to be able to contact you on lighthouse weekend

Regards

Peter

Hi Peter

The VMars interface modification is only if you want to use aviation headseats with internal amplifiers in the headset.

The IBHA is used between a PRC 351/2 or PRC 320 and the IB2/IB3, I believe to amplify the audio into the harness, but I don't have a manual for the IBHA yet, am waiting for the VMars application before I can download the manuals.  You don't need the IBHA if using the 353 or 321 full formfactor radios.

Hi Diana,

Some info gleaned from PRC/320 installation handbook, part 7 supplement 5.

With FFR 24V system the 3 way distribution box has 3A fuses fitted to supply the 24V DCCU which is used to charge the battery on the 320 set.

Probably same size fuse will be ok to charge battery on 351 set mounted in vehicle.

Should  be ok for 352 set also as charging current from DCCU would be limited to suit battery.

Higher current fuses would probably be used for 353 and 321 sets.

With GS vehicles that use 12V from vehicle battery and single outlet Dist box, a 7 Amp fuse is specified as the 12 V DCCU will draw more current to charge the radio battery.

Regards

Peter

I saw that they had been sold.

I have just bought a pack of the 3A fuses as it looks like that is the size I should be using for my 320.

Last couple of cables I got from UK were in sealed packages but some of the earlier ones were not.

You could make some if you get really desperate.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Clansman-KIT-12-Pin-Harness-Cable-1m-approx-/111137938164?pt=UK_Collectables_Militaria_LE&hash=item19e0565af4

I have bought 12, 7 and 2 pin connectors and most times they were NOS in sealed bags.

Matching cable is available usually new.

As usual freight costs don't help.

Have you tried the pineapple antenna base and aerial yet or are you waiting until next weekend?

Peter

next weekend

I haven't run the FFR radio batteries for a while and their flat so I'm reconditioning them so I have 24V to run a DCCU for the 320

Don't have a 12V DCCU
