Auto Colour Coded Wire Suppliers
« on: June 20, 2016, 12:54:32 PM »
I need to do some wiring in my 101 and want to match the colour coding where I have to change or lengthen wires.

So is there anywhere in Aust where you can buy colour coded wire that I can match the various coded in the current wiring?

Thanks

Garry

Yes.
You may have to buy a roll. You can buy a few rolls and then sell it to those who may wish to buy off you.
I have some info which I can find on the weekend.

Or you could give these guys a call. See what they've got.

Thanks Mick.  i tried to give them a call but went to the answering machine so I will try tomorrow.

Going through their site it seems they do provide what I want but min length is 20m which is far more than I want - so will get expensive.

I will see what they say tomorrow.

Cheers

Hi Garry
As Mick said Vinwire is the go. They have the fabric covered wire as well as the normal type wire.
I have purchased from them and they're good to deal with.
Cheers

Thanks for the tip but Vin Wire do not do modern plastic wire - only old stuff.

Looks like I will need to get what I want from the US - was hoping to buy local but no luck so far.

Hi Gary
That's strange as I have had some bits done by Vinwire and they supplied non fabric covered wire.
Cheers

Are we getting confused between looms and wires?
All the looms I have bought from him have plastic coated wires in the looms.

Maybe but I can only go on what they advised me when I rang them this afternoon - I was asking about wire not looms.

Hi Garry

I got some hard to find colour coded wire from a place that restores classic MG’s and Jaguars.

Those days the auto industry was more “local” in suppliers.

I think if you take a sample down to a Classic British workshop with some cash it could end well.

Thanks Phil - by "Classic British workshop" I assume you mean a car restoration business.

Pick up a used series 3 harness for not much money and strip out whatever colours you need  ... works for me.

Thanks but I have now ordered what I specifically need from the US.  These days it seems it is easier to go inline and order from overseas rather than source form local supplies.  I prefer to buy and support local but these days it is seems harder to achieve.

Cheers

That's smart. Best answer in this thread. Too late for me.

*blushes*

But seriously, if you are inclined to get a used harness, before you buy, strip back some of the binding tape and check that the pvc coating of the wires hasn't hardened ... coz by now ie ~45 years later, a lot of that stuff is brittle.   Another benefit, is that you also score the moulded connectors.
