Half-Ponton Bridge Boat pics
« on: August 21, 2017, 10:29:13 AM »
A few pics of my Half-Ponton Bridge Boat (affectionately referred to as a Bailey Boat or Ugli Boat) for your interest. I finally got a trailer at the last auctions that fit her nicely so now I can hook it up to the Perentie (as soon as I replace the tow hitch to an eyelet).

Yep.  I posted a manual outlining how they are used in another section for anyone else that has picked one up. But yep, they are joined stern to stern

The Bailey Bridge was originally designed to be capable of use as a floating bridge using Bailey components and special pontoons with attachment points on the gunwhales.  I don't know if the particular 'pontoon boat' pictured is one of these or not, but the Bailey system covered the full range of bridging, from low capacity floating bridges to Triple Storey high loading bridges and Extra Wide Bailey Bridges (EWBB) and even Bailey suspension bridges.

The most common was the standard Bailey 'single single' (BSS) bridge.

The system was incredibly variable in application, all the while using standardised 'quick-clip/peg-together' components.

Dozer
what is it like as a boat?  Is it usable for Estuary and river use only, or can it handle a bit of swell?
A fun thing to have but you need a few mates to buy them so you can try it out as a bridge.
(11 mates if you need the six span bridge)

cheers
David

Hey David
Unfortunately my mates interests don't extend to these boats so I need 11 people from here to help make that dream come true.

It is really an estuary boat and although it had a spoon shaped bow that can take a bit of swell, it's not her strength.  I live on the Georges River south of Sydney and sometimes get a decent chop in Botany Bay which she handled OK.

But the beauty of her is the ease with which it pops up on the plane even though it's currently powered by a mere 18hp and is 18ft 6 inches, as well as how stable it is when stationary.  It's a LandRover equivalent on the water and I would love to find others here who have one.  Was thinking of bringing it down to the Corowa Swim in next year on the back of the Perentie, rather than bringing a trailer.
