RE: Heater box assembly replacement
« on: June 26, 2023, 11:58:24 AM »
I have to replace my heater box assembly and found that the old assembly (HYG2965, HYG6088, UTP1267?) is no longer made. But, apparently part no: BTR4318 is an acceptable replacement. Does anyone know if this is the case?

Perentie and Bushranger 4x4 and 6x6 Heaters.
In answer to the question, the simple answer is ‘Yes’. However the reality is a little different.
BTR4318 is a civilian heater and is not suppressed to military standards. This may not matter to many people who just want a replacement heater and therefore BTR4318 will bolt straight into both Perentie and Bushranger 4x4 only. There is one other issue though, and that is that the harness on BTR4318 will not couple to the Perentie 4x4 harness, and therefore an adaptor is required unless it’s acceptable to owners to ‘hardwire’ into the vehicle. Adaptors can be purchased from Vintage Harness, the manufacturers of the OE item. BTR4318 will connect directly into the Bushranger 4x4 harness.
For the 6x6, the matter becomes a little more problematic. The casings of the heaters were modified quite extensively in order to fit the Heaters in the 6x6. The most practical way to modify BTR4318 to fit a 6x6 is to remove the modifications from the old heater with care and refit them to the new heater taking note of required drillings and rivet sizes as removal is undertaken. Once converted, BTR4318 will connect up as per the 4x4 for Perentie and Bushranger noted above.
One final Issue; throughout the years, the heaters in Perentie and Bushranger have changed a number of times. The changes have resulted in the inlet and outlet pipes on the heaters change direction. This has necessitated the modification to the heater pipes on the engine and changes in coupling to the heater. Not all of the changed arrangements have been followed to instruction which has resulted in water loss and in some cases engine seizure. Accordingly it is recommended that the LR Drawing Office Instruction # 1022 for 4x4 be followed to ensure correct fitment and eliminate potential leaks and abrading of pipe and hoses. 6x6 fitment is not critical as there is sufficient length on flexible hose between the heater and the engine heater pipes to allow movement.
