REMLR Wiki - your chance to contribute
« on: April 02, 2015, 09:38:28 AM »
Is is a bit of a forum news first as i am yet to add the news and links to the REMLR website properly.

Over the last week and a bit i have been working on setting up a REMLR Wiki to compliment, and in some instances replace, parts of the REMLR website. What is a wiki? A wiki is a website where anybody can contribute, update, change and correct the information. Wikipedia is the largest example of this and it is an online encyclopaedia. Yes it is open to abuse, but on the whole the information tends to become very accurate. Per 1000 words wikipedia has lest mistakes than Britannica!

So for now it includes vehicle markings, unit markings, member sheds for any kind of vehicle, trip reports and photos and some links to important forum threads.

You can find it at http://www.remlr.com/wiki and you can contribute at any time. I have written up some how to pages to help people work out how to use the wiki.

If anybody has time to start filling in any old trip reports or sheds, feel free. Lets see what we can build as a community!

Richard said it all: "Lets see what we can build as a community!"
I saw a foundation stone at a very old (1890s) "holiday home for country children" on Port Phillip's waterfront at Frankston and the motto inscribed was "Willing Workers Work Wonders".
I think its very applicable.
The result will be an easily updated and thorough platform that works well on PCs and on smartphones as well.

There is also a good thing going on with campsites: www.wikicamps.com.au
...now thats a big project!

Heck yeah !

It's an excellent way to establish and maintain an information repository. You also give the wider REMLR community an effective way to contribute and have a sense of ownership.

... and in essence, that's what we're all about I reckon  :)

Well done Richard !

Pete

Richard I think we need a Sandbox section.

We must stipulate that every page and photo uploaded is prefixed with "sandbox" such "sandbox-tm's-shed" or "sandbox-engine-removal-pic-2013.jpg" etcetera so deletion is simplified.

...what do you think?

I don't get it... You want to make it easy to delete the work of others ?

In the Wiki platform there is only one way to delete - each and every time you must request the mod to do it. You can however "revert" and go back to a version of a file that you changed.

Maybe we shouldn't let people try things out as it causes problem files.

Thus far it wont be on a scale to be a problem compared with the spammers that were hitting it before i put up here that it was up. If a problem occurs we will look at a measure like that.

I have had a look at the REMLR Wiki link and viewed the Template page. Can I suggest that a simple template be created instead of the complex one shown.

http://www.remlr.com/wiki/index.php?title=Shed_Template

Maybe have Members Shed with simple headings such as -

Vehicle Information - Type, Model, Year of Manufacture etc.

Military History

Civilian History

Restoration History

Current Status - Events/displays/shows etc

etc

REMLR could still have a page for each Land Rover type. General information on each type could be written on these pages separate from Members Shed. Some members have multiple Land Rover types so finding a spot for that members shed may be difficult in the current setup on REMLR Wiki page.

What a good idea, but its lacking in pictures, people like pictures.

In the shed section is there a Perentie section?

Stuart, that tenmplate is pretty much what you described when put into a new page.

Also, only replacing small parts of remlr with this in the scheme of things.

Sheds page currently replicates the remlr one existing which is sorted by type. It can be created by person too but that doubles up where people needed to link to. I think by type works best as you can still link to your other sheds for the same owner.

Juddy, should be perentie sections in the appropriate places

Ok, i had another template and it was not working properly so i removed the tags to make the code show and so now you should be able to hit edit on that page, copy the code and paste it into a new page.

And juddy, if a section is missing, just add it! Thats the point of this ;)
