Series 2A bell housing.
« on: April 06, 2013, 03:59:48 PM »
I managed to get a bell housing  :D, it did need some remedial work on it to bring it up to scratch, well you know how they all go left out in the weather

after a few hours with a cup wire brush and about 3 kgs of sand, it looked a whole lot better

I lost count on how many times I got "ZAPPED" with static electricity while grit blasting it :o :o :o :(, I can't remember that ever happening before!!!, anyway I like to make my own gaskets where possible,

as many that you can buy these days, just don't fit,?? maybe the cutting dies shrunk???, anyway it's packed away now for a rainy day sometime in May/June, cheers Dennis :)

Is that a specific gasket material you have there?

When I needed gaskets for my old VN commodore throttle body, I was advised to make them by using manilla folders and 'mallet' them over the part needing a gasket to imprint the edge, cut, and use that.. never had a problem in the year after I did it :D

Yes, but where do you get it from?  Some things can be quite difficult to acquire down this way at times.  Helps to know who or what type of shop stocks these things ;)

Phoenix, it is possible to use one of the liquid gaskets instead, if you find it hard to source paper. I use Loctite Black Maxx for applications such as a gearbox; used sparingly and sensibly, it works very well. The only thing to consider, is whether the original gasket has been used by the manufacturer to pre-load a bearing; or to space an assembly, for example. Assembling dry to check these, is the easy way to answer the question,

Is there a SuperCheap in Tassie? I purchased both cork and normal gasket paper from them here.
