Army GS drop in aviation firefighters
« on: May 27, 2012, 08:30:36 AM »
Hi there all

I dont know alot about these or have seen any in real life - hope others may have and shed some information regarding them.

But they look to be a drop in unit for avaition fir fighting, looks like a compressed gas fire fighting medium in the front (see pressure cylinders and regulators) and other various fir fighting equipment

Like alot of Military purpose built equipment they are all slightly different.

Enjoy the pictures

G'day Wayne

Heres a photo of the same unit type in use Vietnam 1970. The rotating beacon and spotlight appear higher than those shown in the B&W photo in post #1. The unit sitting in a paddock (photo #1) in Fireys post show that the spotlight post has a hole at the bottom that allows it to be extended up to two fixed positions.

BTW, it would be good if the unit sitting in the paddock could be restored in the near future.

Looks to be in good condition. I suppose hard to say what one would be worth, but being a rare item, could well be worth over $1000.

Do we have any idea how many were manufactured, and when they may have left the service?

Another shot from Vietnam.

What text would the long white sticker likely to have on it?

Maybe, ARMY FIRE SERVICE.

On both of my 2a Fire Trucks the original markings are red on white and black on white.

This is a drop in that I had a look at.

Peter

They are very cool arent they, that one looks very good.

I see they were powered from the NATO plug... doesnt appear to be any pump on board at all...I assume the bottle holder under side tray height would be your compressed gas as well wayne?

mainly extinguishers and rescue gear..    great photos though guys,

and no idea how many of these units may have existed? (would they be listed as on vehicle strength in SVN in unit diaries etc?)

Some more images of the inserts.

There are two located together, still in good order. The units did have items stowed in them.  They were configured differently. Will have to check my laptop as I'm sure I have more images of these.

Cheers
