« on: March 21, 2013, 08:19:57 PM »
Many of this years and previous years Corowa Swim-In will know the Edwards Family from Central Victoria, George Edwards died prior to Last years event and today we hear his son Mike has been killed in his SIII FFR and No.5 trailer on the way home.

I was only just talking to Mike on Saturday arranging for the manufacture of rear Mk3 tac holders, he was also the manufacturer of reproduction antenna brackets.

My sincere condolences to his mother, family and friends.

You would have met him, a very nice cam SIII FFR 6006B with the Bamford that was originally on my FFR.

They usually had their tent set up on the RHS of the main row near the end often next to Manfred.

The participant that was killed on his way home when his vehicle apparently blew a tyre and rolled over a couple of times was well known VMVC member 57yo Mike Edwards of Victoria.

Information to hand is that Mike was travelling between Corowa and Yarrawonga in his Landrover and trailer when the accident occurred. It appears that no other vehicle was involved.

Mike was a regular attender at Corowa and enjoyed it very much, arriving days before the official start and staying on after the event. His large, rigid frame tent with boxes of bits and pieces for sale on the grass out front was like a drop-in centre for many of us.

Mike and his father Graham who passed away 18 months or so ago are a tremendous loss to the Victorian HMV scene.

David

This is very concerning, most of us drive on the same type ex-Army Olympic Steeltrek, Mike had on his FFR.  Perhaps it's time we leave originality behind and consider ROP on our Series Landies if we drive them long distances at highway speed.

This is very sad news. Dreadful news.

As for MVA details and thinking about tyre blow outs or causes, and ROP, I think I'll leave it for later.

I am still waiting on final details of the funeral arrangements for Mike Edwards. It is possible that it may be a private funeral for family. Peter McNeill shared the attached photo of Mike.

What a rotten thing to happen! Condolences to all of you.

On the subject of tyres; I remember reading about an MGC owner who had a similar nasty accident but survived. In his case his little-used, road-legal tyres were too old and were found to be the cause of the accident. The recommendation from the tyre people was that any tyre older than 6 years should be treated with the most intense suspicion. Apparently the rubber hardens and is more likely to crack after 6 years.

To change them every 6 years would be expensive but if it avoids a blow-out, then definitely worthwhile.

I am going to put a roll bar and seat-belts in my S1,

Cheers Charlie
