Stupid incorrect vent seals
« on: February 21, 2013, 09:09:18 PM »
I have cursed my workshop today, and its not his fault, last year I bought some door seals for the firefly, they did not fit, so Nick at Dunsfolds told me all about poor fitting seals, so I got some from them and they fitted the Firefly like a glove.  This time round I decided to get some from a well know series spares place in Sydney, having been promised they would fit, well they don't, you just cant close the vents, the seal are too thick, now i would not have been too bothered other than, the black sealant i used to stick them down, is going to be a pain in the butt to clean up. Plus it was dark I was on my own, it was FUBARB.

I now have a better set on its way.

Not sure if anyone else as had this issue.

Are they Bearmach brand Juddy? I recently had the same problem  ;)

Actually I had an even bigger problem. I ordered them online via eBay from a UK seller who advertised LR parts with pics of original seals and when they arrived there were Bearmach's that were too thick. The seller suggested I return them and they'd either replace or refund.

I did this. Then came 4 months of continually emailing to get my money. I eventually ended up reporting them the every online complaints I could find like Fair Trading UK, eConsumer, Internet Crimes Complaints.......

I advised them I was doing this and my money was refunded (within 2 weeks) including what it has cost me to send them back. It wasn't a pleasant experience, and although the seller has a good name in the Land Rover world it seems (from other customers I spoke to) I won't be using them again and couldn't recommend them to anyone. I also now know to lodge an eBay complaint within the 45 allowable days if ANYTHING looks suss ever again  ;D

When I returned the seals, this seller told me he had had 3 other customers recently complain that the seals were too thick

I have had the same problem about 9 years ago, I ordered some from a well known supplier here in Oz, they were the wrong shape and thickness, "they" told me this is whats available these days, and they don't go in the pressing on the bulkhead, they go onto the vent itself, I can't write down here what I said to them on the phone >:( >:(.
I have since always used from UK suppliers 'Genuine' parts and I specify that.

The only way to fit vent seals is when the vehicle is stripped down, vents not fitted,

which gives you full and open access, apply glue to pressings in bulkhead, small amount on seal, wait until glue has gone tacky, apply carefully.
Still difficult to do on your own, better with 2 people, press down seal all the way around, fit vent hinge pins, then vent regulator's, close shut on the seal,

 job done, cheeers Dennis

Good work all, the thing I found hard was re-fitting the vent arms, what a pain, and as I have the fly screens I could only do with the arms in place. add to the fact, i only have screw type heads, so its al most impossible to re fit the arms to the vents..

The company I had trouble with apparently has genuine ones in stock but I am not going to order them. I did suggest they could send some as replacements but.........
