Gday to all, I purchased a Perentie from the Minto auction earlier this month, VIN  salldhaziff378257 the ARN 230059. Unfortunately there was no log book in the vehicle when it arrived in Perth. What I dont understand is that all the other Perentie 4x4s seem to have ARN begining with 480 etc, could anybody enlighten me as to why the ARN on my vehicle is so different , it was built 07/ 89. The only reference I can find on the vehicle re the ARN is what was written on the windscreen prior to the auction, it is also mentioned on the invoice reciept . Appreciate any knowledge you can give . Thanks Johno

Raaf

Or even RAAF  ;)

Army traditionally used ARN up to 199-999 and then restarted the numbers hence SIIa were ARNs up to around the 170s prefixes and SIII 20s and 30s prefixes
RAAF traditionally used 200-001 and above.

That said I have a trailer with a number above 200 which I believe is Army.

221-upwards and 223-upwards, 230-upwards etc are RAAF vehicles I believe.

The groupings were allocated at some stage, Don't recall the precise story about it.  I have some information about it somewhere I think.

Congratulations on the purchase.

I'm sure the RAAF numbers go lower than that, I know that RAAF Jeeps in the Korean war were only in the 2teens as is the RAAF FX Holden I posted above.

Even simple searches of the AWM WWII photographic collection reveals RAAF Jeep 203-957 http://www.awm.gov.au/collection/P02874.224212-594  http://www.awm.gov.au/collection/124244/ 213-583 http://www.awm.gov.au/collection/OG2271/  so it is likely the 2 prefix started as early as WWII.

John,

A RAAF one - that's disappointing.  Are you going to send it back ?

Some of the new G-Wagen 6x6 numbers are 403-xxx or 405-xxx. That's either an altogether new service in the ADF, or they've opened up a whole new book of numbers!

It wouldn't have been worked very hard off-road in the RAAF so probably abetter vehicle.

There is a bit more to the numbering besides the number itself. There are a few different plates out there and they all signify different things.
The good old GS Mack truck carries this type.

whereas an S Line line haul fleet type carries these;

Some are different again; CL card fleet MAN

A G wagen;

Leased Semi Trailer;

whereas CL type card fleet light vehicles are different once again. Some say "Army, serving the nation", and on some the first two numerals are significant as the year of purchase

Is it true that the ADF alpha numeric plates are usually driven by civilian drivers?  The ones frequently used by DMO.

I don't know about that, but Bandiana has quite a collection of plates in a display case on the LHS of the hall now.  Trouble is I forgot to take a photo on my recent visit!
