I agree with Mick, I actually think prices around the $10K are probably correct for these units.  The Civvy Isuzu 110 don't have the gal chassis and are much higher mileage, the only bonus on the civvy ones are the availability of the 5 epeed, although there is now an AULRO member making kits to close couple the Isuzu 5 speed gearbox to the Land Rover LT230 transfer making ratio selection much more flexible.

Juddy - I guess it's time for your mob to make a bulk purchase of 4 bolt power steering boxes and Isuzu PAS pumps.  Perhaps even a kit to retrofit PAS onto the perenties.

Actually 5 years is how long the disposals are scheduled for I believe.  Not convinced prices will stay that high for a soft top vehicle that is only 3 door, vs a hardtop 5 door, but I guess time will tell.

Dave will have a better idea, however AFAIK the 4 bold PAS box for the Discovery and Defender bolts straight onto the chassis where the manual steering box mounts and I believe the same shafts and pitman arm are used on both boxes.

The PAS pump is an Isuzu part superseded to IS-8970788790 (about $760 last time I was quoted - still need it)
Then there are the hoses from the PAS pump to PAS box and the one to the fluid reservior should be LR Aust parts.
The LR PAS reservoir and bracket. Should be the same on 90/110 and Defender 90/110/130.

Fitting the PAS pump to the engine means removing the cover on the timing case and slipping in the pump, no belts or pulleys, but will be some studs or bolts.  Can look when I'm at home.

So what is the cruise speed of the 4 speed military versions versus the 5 speed civvies?

For example would you need to make the swap to make long distance cruising comfortable

First, you need space.
Send me the workshop

Seriously, Juddy, are you thinking of getting one of these Perenties and converting it to five speed? Adding power steering? Air conditioning would be good if you want to set it up as a tourer.
Maybe we should start another thread. "Perentie improvements and modifications."
With the numbers that may be coming on the market, could potentially be a big topic. Might need a section on its own.

The 4 speed have a 0.97:1 transfer ratio while the 5 speed have (IIRC) a 1.22:1 transfer and the O/D 5th is about 0.77:1 .  This means that in 4th in a 5 speed box is lower than in the 4 speed but the 5th gear is marginally higher at 0.94:1.

What this means on the road is similar top speeds but the 5 speed is more able to maintain a higher average speed when hills are considered.

The LT95 4 speed is an excellent and robust box and more reliable over time than the LT85 5 speed.  However using the Isuzu 5 speed with the LT230 is superior to both the LT95 and LT85/LT230 combinations.

You cannot easily swap the LT95 for a 5 speed in the 6X6 (without re-engineering) as the rear axle drive system uses the unique configuration of the LT95 transfer box.

With the numbers coming on the market, I think they will be a need for such modifications.  The workshop we utilise is equipped to do just about any vehicle engineering job out there, some of it is very specialised work.  What percentage of these Perenties have standard land rover parts?  and when are the DOD going to be off loading there parts?

No you cant have the workshop.........

Mick

If I understand correctly Justin is the Australian agent for a UK after market accessories company specialising in Land Rover.  Therefore they would have wholesale access to OEM and pattern Land Rover assemblies they could import to Oz cheaper than we can buy them.

The army 4X4 Perenties do not have power steering and it seems that every civvy owner of a Perentie makes retrofitting of PAS a priority.  If there are about 2,000 Perenties being released over the next few years, I personally think there would be a market for someone to make up a retrofitting kit for sale to new perentie owners.  Even if they only do it in batches of 10 to 20 kits at a time.

Perhaps someone doing disk brake kits for Series Landies may also be interested.

Yes the Land Rover power steering box is exactly what is needed, but the Land Rover PAS pump will not fit the 4BD1 engine. (The Isuzu pump drives off the timing gear)

So what you need is a lot of the Land Rover PAS parts, the Isuzu PAS pump and hoses to connect them together.

Do you want to store a few vehicles for me?
I'd like a Mack recovery truck c/w trailer and a Mog with a crane but nowhere to keep them.

Yes. An excellent suggestion. Maybe someone should have a quiet word in his ear.

I could arrange storage for you...

Getting the Land Rover Parts is not a issue, I also think theres room for a interior upgrade kit, some of these land rovers will need a tidy up, and I think we could also offer a seat and trim upgrade kit.

I would like to look into this further.  I am also returning to the UK mid year for a number of business meetings, and this maybe a good opportunity to talk Pernties...

Don't Perenties have Isri seating not the usual Defender seats?

Any door cards would have to be modified Series cards (or Wolf if they exist) not Defender or 110 door cards.
