'The Termites' and 11 Movement Control Group SVN?
« on: January 24, 2013, 02:06:18 AM »
The Army Museum of Military Engineering have received a request for information from a former Qantas Captain who used to operate the 'Skippy Squadron' flights in and out of Vietnam during the war.

He is looking for information relating to a group known as 'The Termites' and 11 Movement Control Group. If you can assist (or know someone who can) please contact Mr. Alan Kitchen on  02) 9594 0254.

Hey Diana,

The termites would have been 30 Terminal Squadron , that would have been at Middle Head in Sydney and are now based in Townsville. 11 Movement Control would have been based at Enoggra Barracks in Brisbane and have a new name now , what that is I don't know.

Further to above Diana, what used to be called MCO's - Movement Control Offices, they are now called JMCO's. I think 1 JMCO is located in Townsville the rest I don't know.

Hi Mick

I think Alan is looking for the Termites involved with the Qantas charters during the Vietnam airlift of the Aussie Diggers.  A bit of a veterans reunion.

Thanks

I had to back to January to check this.  The number I posted was exactly as requested, however there was a correction posted out from the Museum a week later on the 31st.

Remember that the Termites of the Sth Vietnam days would have been RAE, those elements were transferred along to the RACT back in the 70's when the transport elements of RAE and RAASC were merged to become the RACT of today.
Today's Terminal Squadron and Movement Control units come under an entirely different Corps management than the ones of the Vietnam days.
Having said that, an extract from the Commanders Diaries 1 Coy HQ RAASC 5 April 1967 reads:
"DADST, OC 1 Coy., 2 i/c 5 Coy., interviewed by Comd 1 ALSG and directed that Coy. RAASC to accept Command and control 30 Terminal Group RAE which comprises 1 Offr and 16 ORs. Also notification that actual Terminal Group Operations would be tasked and controlled through HQ of the RAASC for R & Q." Historical note (written by the OC 1 Coy in 1967) "This could well be the humble birth of the Australian Corps of Transport."

Regards
Glen

Glen ,

Good pick up, I think the RACT was formed in 1973 ??? And yes 30 Terminal Sqn, 35 Water Tpt Sqn and Movement Control joined the truckies of the RASC to form the corpses of Trucks.
