Pintle ring/lunette for No.5 trailer.
« on: January 17, 2013, 05:14:44 PM »
Hello,

I'm looking to source a pintle ring/lunette to suit a No.5 trailer.

My trailer was one of a number that were sent to auction in Brisbane a few years ago without a pintle ring/lunette and I'd like to get it back to spec.

About a third of trailers arriving at auction have had their lunettes removed for use as spares for the remaining fleet.

If unsuccessful here you may have to fabricate a replacement.  Carter Wesco in Forge St Blacktown make the ring with a female thread so you can make up what ever you want.

Thank you Diana,

I'm a little bit intrigued as to what becomes of the pintle rings/lunettes which have been removed prior to auction.

If they were storing these items for use on the remainder of the older fleet, then it begs the question of where they're storing them, as "in service" personel asking that question seem to always come away with an abrupt "negative".

I'm aware that one service branch did still have 2x brand new pintle ring assemblies (with mounting collar) on the shelf of their store, but no second hand cache was admitted to.

I can't help but wonder if they simply do away with the removed items as some form of safety/duty of care thing?

I have seen a couple of assemblies from trailers after service where the mounting flange casting cracked or parts broke off inside, and one where the lunette shaft was loose in the flange.  I can only imagine that the damaged assemblies in service go in the scrap bin and without spares the trailer goes to auction.

With the chain of responsibility regulations anything is possible.

There is a No.5 trailer coming up for auction at Manheims in QLD soon. If you have the time, go to the auction and speak to the buyer of said trailer. He/she may be happy to offload the ring to you if they plan to replace it with a standard ball type coupling.

There is a disposals store in qld: bushies dco. They have a website and fb Page. They sell No5 trailers, with your choice of hitch. Not surprisingly they also sell the pintle ring separately - for a profit. Apparently the price goes up when trailers go up for auction, because pintle rings are suddenly in demand.

Anyway aside, the photos on the No5 on his fb Page (keep looking at older and older posts) have a modern modification (other than the normal jockey wheel etc) :The rear hitch (at back of trailer) has been chopped off. A plate has been welded over the hole. The cut off piece has been re-welded above the drawbar for the spare wheel.

Tommy, I'm in Melbourne so the Brisbane auctions are a bit too far away to do that. Thanks anyway.

Aitch, found the website. Never found anything on trailers there. Did see the ones they've got for sale on FB, but no info. I've messaged him to see if he's got one and shall await his reply. Many thanks.

I did note the spare wheel mod, and yes, may consider something like that myself.

** Gee that was quick, they replied. Will contact them asap. Thank you Aitch.

Their price for a Lunette last year was about $425.00   !!!!!
Be interesting to see what they are now.
Must be the law of supply and demand I expect.

There were whole trailers (sans lunette) Manheim-Fowles auctions last year that went for $400.

I had to pay $1650 + fees for a very good ( straight and complete) one in Melb start of last year!

Price obviously varies according to demand and how many come up - not many in Melb unfortunately

regards

That was a very nice trailer though. The best one I've seen at the auctions.
I was bidding on it too.

It's worthwhile watching the Manheim-Fowles catalogues for Moorebank.  Last year quite a number went with about half having the lunette.  The ones without were $400-$500 fall of hammer which equates to something over $500 each when GST and fees are added.  The ones with lunettes went for around $750 ending around $950 with fees and tax.

There are currently a lot of trailers in the vehicle park at the Defence Materiel "DNS & DC" Moorebank, so likely they will be going to auction over the next year or two.
