Air Cleaner

Hi everyone,

After having a lot of issues with my 1963 88" GS (head gasket and cracked radiator) it looks like i am on the home straight getting her back on the road. Currently it has a Stromberg carbie with a Holden air cleaner. Whilst the radiator is out i would like to install a battery tray that has the air cleaner bracket. I have sourced an original air cleaner to use, but was wondering how to both clean it (looks to have course steel wool inside), and prepare it for use.

On Saturday it goes into a historic machinery show at Milang in SA (Yesterday's Power Rally) under the unrestored military vehicles category. Hopefully i have it all running smoothly to get it there.

Thanks for any help!

Hello Will,

Best thing to do is pull the air cleaner apart, there should be two mesh cages, one is part of the main air cleaner body it wont come out the other should be stand alone, then immerse all the components in kero for a couple of days to loosen all the gunge up then scrub it all with an old dish brush, when you think its not to bad blow it out well with compressed air, i have done hundreds like this and you can get them very clean, when it is done fill the bowl up with clean engine oil to the level mark.
