107703 prototype
« on: July 13, 2013, 12:08:48 PM »
OK, you fire engine enthusiasts, add Land Rover registered 107703 to your list.

I think it must have been a prototype, and it was 'registered' with a plate previously issued to (wait for it..... ) a trailer! Not the first time a plate was 'reused' for vehicles under trial, for example, the amphibious Land Rover and the concept demonstrator 1 ton GS truck both used the same reg plate at different times.

No info on chassis or other details. Seen under test at Trial and Proving Wing in the 1960s.

"In the early 1960's, Wormald Australia was contracted by the Army to build a prototype Fire Tender based on the 3/4 Ton Land Rover. Subsequently Alexander Perrie & Co were contracted to build the production vehicles. Alexander Perrie & Co build approximately 30 Fire tenders for the Army and the photographs below show the vehicles in various stages of production." snip from http://www.remlr.com/lrFirefactorypics.html

The "factory" photos show Series 2A only.

With that 107-703 ARN... i'm wondering -- is the prototype a Series 2?

Same thing happened with the trials of the Land Rover SIIa Forward Control, 108-431 is also in the ARN book as a trailer.

It seems a common practice with the Army Design Establishment.
