Paint stripping - advice sought

My first meaningful post on this site....

We have an early 2a GS that has been overpainted by some previous zealous owner with an awful light green paint which seems to be quite impervious to any bunnings-type paint stripper.

All the other usual suspects (brake fluid, caustic soda, hydrochrolic acid etc used intelligently) have little or no effect on this paint as well.

Some success has been achieved on small sections with CRC gasket stripper but if we have to do the whole lot with this it will prove rather expensive - I read on aulro that there is a Permatex version which may be better but I can't seem to get it - enquiring around it seems that Loktite have one as well.

Anyhow - most of the external of the vehicle remains yet to be done so if anyone has any useful suggestions as to how this can be done economically(at home) - I would appreciate them.

{It would be nice to get it painted and take it to Corowa next March)

My advice is buy some auto/paint stripper, (don't waste any more $$$'s at b******gs) don't be tempted to do a large area all at once, my advice would be to do no more than 600mm square, wash off with H2O, pressure wash is better, cheers Dennis

sounds like your vehile has been painted with "2 pak" in that case I would advise you to take a small panel to your local Automotive Paint Supply Shop and get it checked, if it is they will then advise you as to what stripper to use.

Thanks to all who have replied so far - all suggestions taken on board and I'll talk to a panel shop tomorrow,

and Juddy, the closest soda blaster is in Armidale and I'm trying, at this stage, to avoid removing all the panels ..............but taking some to him is an option

Good old wet and dry.

I was happy to to do my bonnet with wet and dry, sander, then paint stripper, 12 hours later, only slightly better, should have just taken it down to the blasters, saved time and money really, as time is money too....

Use a coarse grade first and finish off with a fine, not too fine as to polish it. The coarse usually rips it off with a hose going to clean out the grit on paper.
I am starting on doors and guards on the 2 GS's today.

Yep....a bucket of water and wet n dry plus heaps of paint stripper. It takes ages but if time is no worry................

Diana - I've tried a sample area with Septone and it seems that, with a rented pressure washer from Coates it may get the job done on the tub - protective gear obviously needed and your safety and other advice is noted - thanks

but I'll be taking the doors, bonnet, guards & tailgate (detachables) to the soda guy over in Armidale I think
