Chassis and drive train colour?
« on: December 14, 2012, 08:55:46 PM »
Hi, just hoping to get some thoughts on what colour i should paint the chassis, springs, tailshafts and diffs on a 71 model 2a, 109 gs. Had a  look at the reference pics in the colour scheme section its a bit hard to tell. would it be safe to say everything but the rear diff centre is O/D? most of it was when i stripped it.
Thanks

In short, they came out of factory black.
If the army repainted them (and they often did), they would have done little masking and the chassis got painted olive drab.
You can chose either and still be right.

Check out the photo's of Juddy's workshop. That is a good one to look at. He painted the chassis olive drab but I think it started out black.

You see on Juddy's 4th photo, the rear cross member is olive drab.
It would have come out of the factory black, but, whilst in service, it would have been painted olive drag for no ither reason than convenience.

And its strange that they only painted the rear and left the other bits black, but then on other s they painted it all green

Yours probably got a quick freshen up whereas the others may have been a rebuild.
I don't think the army had black paint back then. Green, yes. White, yes.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that from the factory chassis's were being painted O/Drab, the chassis on one of my 109's was Olive Drab, not just the outside bits you see, it was all over as you can see in this image

the chassis was on a jig at the time and had been pressure washed, to reveal the Olive Drab paint, cheers Dennis
ps my personal preference for chassis n diff's etc is Gloss Black,,. like this

this is 113-372.
Here are 2 images of my 109 Wksp rebuild job, with my old mate Graham D inspecting the work LOL

here is the same chassis partially painted in Gloss Black

refitted with Salisbury differential

hope they are of some help, cheers,,.

Hello All,
Some chassis's came out of the factory black and some came out OD, i think it depended on the batch and what was specified. there are pics of some new vehicles on REMLR with OD chassis's.

After changing my mind about 10 times:) I decided to go with what it is was when i got it, evrerything O/D. Ill post some pics when i get some colour on it.
