Tyres
« on: January 08, 2024, 07:14:22 PM »
Hi, I need new tyres.

I did purchase a set of Michelins ex-army via the Grays (Frontline Machinery) auctions (photo).  Unfortunately these are over 5 years old now (I stored in my shed) but appear to be sound. Tire fitters are reluctant to fit them.

My question: is there a legal way to fit the old rubber?

Or, what modern tyre best replicates the old Michelins my Perentie came with?

Thanks all

Despite the urban myth, there is no law which governs how old a tyre is before you cant use it.

It depends on wear and tear, cracking etc.

Just keep on hunting for a tyre place that'll do it.... perhaps buy tubes and tyre balance from them to increase their turn over.....

Good luck

What AGAS5 said.
They law is crystal clear on this issue, it is about condition, there is no such thing as a use by date.
There is a manufacture date on tyres which is more for warranty purposes.

I have no issues with my tyre fitter. He'd fit those to my rims.

You realise, there is a 1970s Ford GTHO that is still running the original factory fitted tyres.

While it is true that there is no law about tyre ages, a bit of common sense also has to apply - an old tyre can look new but still fail.

By way of a personal experience - I had a set of unused tyres stored in a dark room for a number of years and put them on my car mid last year.  In early October I got a thump, thump, thump while driving along, when I pulled up this is what greeted me.
Note the tyre had not actually deflated but had delaminated.  It had only covered about 1000km and looked brand new.

Also I believe someone returning from the Corowa Swim-In a few years ago got killed in his Land Rover due to a tyre blowout of an old military tyre.

All I am suggesting is that a visual inspection is not necessarily a good bench mark and maybe erring in the side of caution is.

I had a new tyre fail a few weeks after fitting. The other five tyres I bought at the same time are still in service almost thirty years later.

On the "Corowa" incident, there is more to the story.
