Hi Charlie
Yes mate, the engine is in, that's the blue painted sump at the top of the picture.
The only other thing I can think of is perhaps they are springs for a six cylinder which of course would make a difference.
I'm tempted to drop the two bottom load leaves off each spring (the short ones) to see if that makes a difference.
Might make the ride a tad softer too.

Thanks also for the info on the sealant.

HI, I'd have to put my head under mine to have a look, I assume this is the prop shaft you took off?? The springs are 9 leaf which is correct as S3 have 11 leafs, the shocker appears to be on a slight angle but should be verticle, the angle of the diff is pointing down which is odd, maybe the springs are back to front??

Sorry can't help but I'll look at mine tonight

Regards
Scott

Thanks Scott
Drivers side shockie is on a slight angle because I cannot get it mounted at both ends at full stretch. Passengers side shockie is OK but drivers side sits up a little higher so am waiting for it to settle a bit. but not happening so I may have to resort to other means. Diff is level and prop shafts are originals. I'm starting to wonder if the springs really have too much curve in them and either I drop the load leaves or have them both reset. Measurements from ground to top shockie bolt (7.50/16 tyres) LH 710mm and RH 740mm.
Has anyone ever heard of Land Rover leaf springs being arse about face?

I had the same problem with my civvy S3; the dampers wouldn't fit back on, so I bought new ones and had the same problem. All I can think is that pulling them apart and de-rusting them made them spread to a new position. In desperation I put the trolley jack under the chassis rail and passed a chain over the rail and under the jack, so that I could compress the spring pack, which allowed the damper to be installed. I haven't road-tested it but I couldn't think of any other solution.

I am fairly sure that the springs can be swapped end-for-end without any issues,

Cheers Charlie

I thought about compressing the springs, so now that you have suggested it, I will try it. Thanks Charlie

Gidday everyone, apologies for being incommunicado for so long. I've had to place major Land Rover works on the back burner due to a thousand reasons and amongst them, a buggered compressor. Anyway, I'm not going to bore everyone stupid with my excuses but happy to say, work has re commenced and I've got the bug again. I must admit I do have to thank Brian Baltrop (B52) for his continued enthusiasm and his occasional not so gentle prods.
I have a swag of parts all cleaned up, etch primed and ready for paint including the tail gate and the bonnet will be ready within a day or two.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

What a great weekend, Wife went to Bali for a week leaving me to my own devices. I decided to do some carpentry.
Time to tackle the seat bases. I had four very second hand looking seat bases, three outside normal width ones and one narrow centre one. A quick trip to Bunning's for some plywood and a couple of hours later, two brand new seat bases, because one of the bases I salvaged was in fantastic condition. The same cant be said about the sponge rubber inside. In its life as a farm hack, local mice had burrowed their way in to it making some quite fancy nests with all the comforts of home. Two original green vinyl seat covers which although they are ragged and petrified will be able to be used as patterns to make new ones. Soon I'll have a seat to sit on behind the wheel when I make car noises and pretend I'm driving down the road. Not long now...
