101 swap lt95 for perentie lt95A what are the gotchas?
« on: October 03, 2022, 01:21:59 PM »
Hi all.

I've taken delivery of a LT95A from a Perentie and my mechanic is going to fit it to my 101. I don't have the time to invest in doing it myself a the moment. I just would like to know the traps for young players. I know about the input shaft and bell housing. He is going to swap them from the old box. I don't know if I should leave the 0.996 High range ratio in the perentie transfer case or go back to the 1.1754 ratio currently in the 101. Is there anything else I should consider?

Cheers

Steve

The oil pump impeller in the old gearbox is made of a fibreglass type product and with the gearbox is out a good move is to replace it with a metal impeller -easy done just remove the cover at the front of the gearbox in the bell housing and swap them out.

Now I do not know if the oil pump in the perentie box has the metal or non metal impeller but if it is the latter then change them out - the new impeller about $60.

Other than that, I dont think there are any issues in the swap other than you have identified - oh wait - the speedo drive I guess change speedo drives around so you have the correct speed etc on your speedo.

As far as final tfr case drive goes, I have the .996 cogs to go in but have not done so.  I have heard a few people put them in and it does reduce revs and noise a little without affecting lower end takeoff in high range but not sure if there is anything to worry about mid range.  I have not rushed to do it as I have a overdrive fitted and while the acceleration is a little slower in O/D the truck still drives OK.

Its not hard to change the hi range cogs around so why not try them and if not happy put the old cogs in.

The rear output housing and handbrake setup is totally different as well. You cannot put the 101 handbrake assembly onto the perentie housing. You can change the housing complete with handbrake over but you would need to redo the centre diff preload. The speedo gears are in this housing so that would sort it as well.

Thanks, guys for the advice. So I'll have to change the rear housing and set the center diff preload and I will probably keep the original ratios. Also, change the oil pump.

The high range gears are not a straightforeward swap, you will be stuck with the original 0.966 of the Perentie box. This is the major area the two boxes differ internally.

The original LT95 transfer box in the 101 runs thrust washers, pads and parallel plastic caged needle roller bearings, the internal bearing surface is square to the gear. The LT95A uses two taper roller bearings on the two gears and intermediate gear. All three are machined to accept the cups of these gears, that's not to say the original 1.1754 gears could not be machined to fit in an LT95A case.

Thanks fv102. I didn't know that I'll keep the high 0.996 transfer then.
