Six position light switch repairs
« on: May 03, 2022, 06:32:08 PM »
My six position light switch was a bit unreliable.
Water had gotten into it some time ago.
I've managed to clean it up but a few of the springs that put pressure on the electrical contacts have corroded badly.

Does anyone know where I can source new springs?

I very much doubt anyone will sell just the springs so my guess would be take a sample to an industrial supply business and try to match.  AJ in Melbourne might have an old wrecked one or indeed a complete unit.

101 Parts in the UK has the complete item https://www.101parts.co.uk/shop/electrical/switches/switch-for-lamps-6-way/  - from I can see this is a good price  :-\

Given the issue you have had with your switch I might have to be a little more careful with mine in future.

Good luck with the search.

They're a robust unit and really easy to fix.
If you have the parts.

What sort of springs are they Mick?

Small springs can often be made out of old ones, even if they are the wrong size or shape,

Possibly the spring inside a ball-point pen might be strong enough,

Tried to.
They're way too big and thick.

Mick I might be able to help you out. I will have a look in the curiosity shop in the shed in the morning and send you a picture.

Sadly, no.
Too big.
A long spring can be cut down. Diameter is important.

no joy Mick but try Element14 or RS components. I am betting they can sort you out.

Hi Mick - What is the inside diameter please?  I have some small springs close to your length but I am just guessinbg the ID.  Failing that, I'd be happy to put the springs into the sonic cleaner with a very dilute vinegar and they will come up like new.    Cheers mate   STDDIVER
