C1510 Inter Paint colour code
« on: April 26, 2022, 05:59:05 PM »
Dear all - I am restoring (Attempting to)  a 7/1970 Ex Army C1510 cargo -"Truck, Cargo, 2 1/2 Ton, CL, with compressed Air Braking".  My question and plea for help is trying to locate the correct colour.  The nomenclature plate from inside the globe box lid tells me it is colour 296.  My paint shop has no idea of this colour and after many searches I have so far come up with no valid answers.  I am interested in the two schemes visible in the REMLR site with one being flat olive drab and the other a lighter "greener" green in what appears to be a satin finish.  Both colours look good but ... I'd like to know more about the green 'satin' finish as the pictures of the truck on our website in this colour are quite striking.  Rewards of drinking refreshment will be supplied for the correct answer - at Corowa next year.  Any and all informnation appreciated.  Any comments on the truck and it's service also appreciated.  Chassis No C25332.   Any information from the owners appreciated even more so.

Could the lighter green be a very faded olive drab?

I never got to drive one but saw a few. I would say Olive drab as everything new was being delivered in that colour as far as I know. It had a bit of a sheen when new but that faded in service.

Thanks Mick and GGG -  Gents - Appreciate your comments -  Attached you will see (I hope) the different lustre of the coatings on the C1510 - when I looked to the inside cabin colour which has faded but not nearly as much as the outside it appears not to be olive drab.  It reminds me of the RAL Green colour in a semi gloss you get some UK military equipment in but a nice lighter green.   I realise that the colour may be something the owner/s may have applied post army service and I was hoping that this could be clarified, otherwise it's olive drab for the respray.

Much appreciated ... Cheers  STDDIVER

Thanks Mick and Mick - boy there are so many real good one liners I could come up with here!   I have checked the 1970 chart and it is not close to the colour I am chasing but it was a really good exercise to go through that chart and all the other colour options, thanks Mick - at least a bit closer.  The US color codes are different to the AUS colour codes, must be the added 'u'.       The code on the can I will get duplicated and into a sample pot and see how this will go.  Thanks Mick  I was going to use both Mick's initials to differentiate between the two Micks but in this case that wouldn't have worked!  Gents, your quality help and your input is greatly appreciated.

Good day,
Chassis C25332 is ARN 177538 disposed of 19-01-1983. I have 177469 and 177527. The paint is not possible to be bought off the shelf, my trucks are painted yellow and the other one is red so I have been searching for the correct colour for years.
I also have a couple of D series Fords that are the same shade of gloss olive. I have had many small batches of paint mixed for the trucks but nothing matches, I have taken into account fading and the need for a polish.
Anyway a couple of weeks ago I took the logbook holder out of the yellow truck to fit to the red truck and discovered the the inside of the logbook holder was pristine unfaded, undamaged gloss olive drab.
I took the holder to our local Home Hardware who take great pride in matching paint. The young fellow that does the paint also works at the local museum restoring small engines. For some reason he also knows a lot about blitzes.
He put the holder under the paint analyser and didn't stop until he had a perfect match. It took him about 5 goes to get the correct shade, checking under lights and taking it outside to check in sunlight. I am very happy with the result.
If you check 2AOD photo sets Mick Smithwick there a lot of C1510 photos, they are not good quality but you get the idea.
Hope some of this helps
Cheers Ken

Thank you very much Ken - Excellent information.  It is good to know that 177469 and 177527 have been saved too.   I will look at the reference you have supplied.  I will remove the log book holder from mine and look at this method as you have done.  Great work - very much appreciated.
