Mating a 4BD1T to an LT-95A
« on: August 17, 2021, 04:56:03 AM »
Help!   My shop in the USA is trying to fit a 4BD1T engine I got to replace the original 4BD1 (cracked Block) that came with my Perentie 6x6 ambulance.  They can't seem to mate the new engine to the transmission.  Does it need a new bell housing or an adaptor of some type?  Anyone that did this I could really use your help.

There is a flywheel housing on the back of the engine that would need to be swapped from your old engine.

Sorry I thought all 6x6s were already turbo diesel, so the 4BD1T.  Has the original turbo diesel been swapped out at some time for a non diesel 4BD1.

Not up on the Perentie Cockcroach but understood 4x4 had the 4BD1 and the 6x6 the 4BD1-T - happy to be corrected and schooled on engines.

No mine had a straight factory installed BD1.  The 4BD1T is an improved version.  Sourced it in the USA as BD1s are near impossible to find.

So you are saying that your 6x6 never had the correct army specified turbo engine - hmmm Ok - never heard of that.

Correct. The 6x6s had a 4BD1T from factory.

Well this truck got exported and shipped to the USA running with a 4BD1. Looks factory.  So can I get help on mating it to the transmission?  Anybody know anything else besides the bellhousing?

As Fattima wrote earlier, you will need to change the flywheel housing to suit the LT95A gearbox, the donor engine that you have obtained will have a different flywheel housing bolt pattern for the gearbox (and may be worth some money either in the states or here in Australia for those who want to fit another G/B to their 4bd1/T).

The special bush piece that is in the rear of the Land Rover (Isuzu) engine will have to be fitted in the crank of your donor engine for fitting the spigot bush into it.

I found the easiest way to remove it was to drill through it, tap a thread in front it, screw a grease nipple in and use a grease gun to hydraulicly remove it from the crank (thanks to Brian Cuddihy/Bearman for that tip).

Any pics of the engine? There are a few obvious differences between the adf (Australian Defence Force) 4bd1 & 4bd1T engines, they have different cylinder heads with the thermostat housing being offset differently and different bolt patterns so that you can’t fit an NA thermostat housing to a Turbo head and vice a versa.

The turbo block also has the area on the block were the turbo oil drain bolts up, the NA ADF blocks didn’t have that.

Other obvious differences are easy to change, such as adding/subtracting turbo, changing rocker cover for turbo/non turbo setup, changing crankcase/rocker cover breather setups, etc.

At some stage someone has obviously dropped out the correct engine and put in the 4BD1 engine in - the gearbox may or may not have also been swapped out as well.
