Alternative engine for 6x6 Perentie
« on: September 22, 2020, 05:20:17 PM »
Hello,

I know how excellent and popular the 4BD1T is. Mine uses no oil, and after 10,000 k's the oil is still relatively clean.

But... I find I can't live with the vibration. I am accustomed to TD5 engines, the refined Perkins in my Oka, and similar, and I am wondering if anyone has experimented with different engines in their Perenties? Mine are both the same, i think it is not a fault, just the way they are. I tend to do long distances each day, and I find the vibes tiring and not especially pleasant.

Or has anyone experimented with heavier flywheels to calm them down?

Grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks, Paul

Paul, In my opinion they should have been fitted with the 6BD1T from the factory and it can be done with a fair bit of modification but then the LT95 would then be a borderline gearbox to handle that amount of torque. An Isuzu MSA 5G gearbox mated to the cut off LT95 transfer would be an ideal combination for the 6BD1T. But you can tweak the 4BD1 by upgrading the turbo, tweaking the fuel delivery, bigger exhaust and adding an intercooler and make it very acceptable for cruising. AND up the idle speed a bit to make it more smoother at idle. I have done this to mine and changed the diffs to 3.54 and can comfortably cruise at 100k even into a headwind and mine is standard outside form with the high canvas canopy on the tray. I also run on 100% biodiesel.

Thanks for the comments Brian. I have no problem with the power with the KLR turbo, it is just the vibration that worries me. It is a similar problem at all speeds, so I don't think changing diff ratios would help. I have put in heaps of sound deadening and sound shielding, so the noise level is acceptable - but still the vibrations remain a problem.

I would love to fit a straight six, but I really can't see how it could be done without major changes to the engine compartment. I have been wondering about a V6, width might be easier to find than length.

Cheers, Paul

Do the Isuzu's have balance shafts?....Anyway ,a certain kind of vibration is related to the "flat "crankshaft of the four.,which is why cars all have balance shafts.,,,I would imagine the only practical sixes would be the Landcruiser  diesels ...like the 1HDT ,which unfortunately is much sought after and priced accordingly......although there is nothing wrong with the 1HZ either ,but as a pre chamber engine ,cracked heads may need replacing.........Ive had Perkins sixes in pickup size vehicles ,and had to greatly enlarge drive train parts to avoid repeated breakage (universals)

The landcruiser 6,s are not big enough. If you are looking to upgrade you would need to look at something around 5.8L in capacity like the 6BD1.
