increasing compression ratio of Series 2a pertol motor

My S2a petrol motor needs decarbonising [I think]. Motor 'runs on' when turning off ignition. Is my diagnosis correct?
 If I remove head to do this job, is there any advantage to have head shaved to increase compression ratio for better use of higher octain petrol?

Running on can be caused by the idle set too high. Maybe start with a tune up.
