Series 2a canvas top
« on: February 18, 2020, 02:11:38 AM »
Greetings from Canada , I building a 1964 88 land rover and having a canvas top built for it and iam trying to decide to have it built like the Australian military canvas top or a regular top with the plastic windows. So I have a question about the land rover series 2a canvas tops that have the  canvas covered side windows . When driving with the window flaps down do you have wind coming through the openings when driving ? How about exhaust through the back one ? My truck is a diesel so I would like to keep the fumes down to a minimum . Iam assuming the holes in the side and back of the canvas are open and not covered in plastic . Thanks Troy

G'day Troy,

Yeah they are open under the flap with a webbing support horizontal and vertical.

Never noticed fumes coming in, the wind doesnt so much come in as just buffer and flap in the wind.

I'll see if I've got photos

Cheers
Scott

Thank you Scott , I need to decide whether to go the plastic windows in the top or go with the window flaps like the series 2a Australian rover tops . The company that Iam buying it from said that he is able to build both styles . Personally I would rather go the Australian military style canvas top but do not want the weather coming in under the flaps when iam driving . It's cold and wet here sometimes lol

This is testing my memory from 1982 Army Reserve days, but my experience was that when the hood was laced shut on wet days, there was a bad problem with exhaust fumes entering the cabin.

By experimenting, I found that by rolling the side flaps up, the exhaust did not reach the driver. Rolling the rear up made the problem worse.

It could probably be made to work as well, if the front ventilators were opened to pressurise the whole cabin, but on a freezing day with rain, that idea did not appeal to me,

7 years driving s111 and s11a in the army never had a problem with exhaust roll the back down on both. The biggest difference is where the exhuasr pipe come out if its at the rear straight out or rear and to one side FFR was no problems any time exhuast at the front :D My own s111 has the exhaust at the rear but pointing out to one side no problems very rearly even smell the exhaust.

Do the side windows flaps let in  air or moisture when they are down ?
