« on: October 26, 2012, 10:37:59 PM »
Hi all,
I am after split rims to suit my 1989 110 County. Can any one point me in the direction to find a set of 6. Can the centers of the fixed rims can taken out to be adapted to other split rims?

Some one had a set for sale, not sure if it was in here or aulro about 6-9 months ago, as for taking the center out of a fixed rim and fitting it to say a jap split rim, well the answer to that is No!!, as the diameter of the fixed rim is smaller than the inside diameter of the split rim. Many years ago 40 at least, the Morris commercial?? van I think had a split rims with the same PCD as the Land Rover, but finding a good set of those would be hard. The rims as fitted to LRPV's etc would be made here in Oz, but by who I wouldn't know, hope thats of some help, cheers Dennis

Yes Dennis,

The split rims were from Morris Commercials - 6.00 wide and about the same offset as the Land Rover Foward Control 2A, pretty heavy too. I have four that we had profile cut (late '70s) with five "spokes" radiating from the wheel nut position - a bit like sunraysias. They were on the trailer with heavy duty 8 ply off road tyres (Bridgestone Jeep Service, later Goodyear Custom Extra Grip, now Michelin X 4x4). The Land Rover ran tubed Highway pattern 8-12 plys on 6 Forward Control 2B rims (2 spares). That way the road tyres were quiet and could be used on sandy stuff, there was no heel & toe wear on the luggy tyres (being on the trailer) on the highway. Off road we switched them around if necessary as the vehicle was often reasonably heavily loaded. Only had one puncture that I recall - try taking any of those tyres off Forward Control rims :'(  - simple to repair a puncture with split rims. That's why the LRPVs are fitted up this way.
