170-295 Ex SVN saved and under restoration.

Hello All,

Last year I found and recovered Mk3 170-295 near the Qld border in the area of Goondiwindi.

I have commenced a ground up restoration which will be fairly slow as the truck has had a hard life with the Army, hard life as a tanker, hard life as a gantry crane carrier and then left to rot on an outback station.

Will try to load up some pics in due course

Looks as if you used an A-frame to tow it home – what did you pull it with?

Hello Chazza,

Yes, I used a genuine ex Army A frame for the first 100km of towing back to civilization where it was then hoisted onto a tilt tray etc

My tow vehicle was my trusty Landcruiser Troopy.

Sometime in it's post military service the truck had been fitted with an electric fuel pump, the mechanical fuel pump being blanked off on the side of the engine.

In due course the original pump will be sourced and fitted with a new electric pump discreetly installed as a back-up.

Although I have not yet started the engine I'm hoping the compression etc is up to par.

It's about to get a new rocker cover gasket, new vacuum advance, new plugs/points/leads/dizzy cap & rotor then see where we go from there.

Indications are that I may need to remove the engine and fit a new rear main seal and probably a new clutch driven plate while the engine is hoisted out.

While carefully sanding down the driver’s door several markings came up.

More research to be done but it is documented in service with 1 Transport South Vietnam

- And here’s a tiny bit of unique history for this particular truck scratched deeply into the driver’s door skin ‘Trinky’ was probably the surname or nickname of a previous driver during it’s Army service.
