BLUEBELL INFO REQUEST - LR 110 LEAKING NEARSIDE AXLE

G`day Boys,

I have a leaking seal on the nearside rear axle of my 110.

Is it a major problem and is it okay to drive ? I`m around 300k from home.

Any advice appreciated.

If it is getting in the brakes it is a problem. 300 km might use up all of the oils as well.

Is there a garage near you where it can be inspected?

The leak is on the outside of the tyre if that makes sense ? And shouldn't leak back into the breaks.

Could it be that final flange seal which if topped up with oil would be fine? Is it normal for oil to get this far ; shouldn't the final axle section be all grease ?

Sorry for my ignorance , I hope this makes some sense ?

the oil should be normal gear oil  85/140 will do the job nicely.
I dont believe the rear axles are grease packed only the front hubs on some.

Mick, if it's a perentie 110 the rear bearings will be grease filled. I you have oil leaking from the drive flange area it will either be the rubber cap split or the drive flange bolts have come loose. It won't be much oil come out there but it does look like a lot as it spreads across the rim. Check the condition of the cap and see if the 5 bolts on the drive flange are loose.

Bearman, I did need to tighten the flange bolts. Is all I need to do is top up diff oil levels and leave it at that or is there a bigger problem ?

Nah just top up the diff when you can. No biggie. When you get home and have a few spare hours one day pull the flange off and clean everything up and get a new gasket and loctite the bolts with 243 and torque them up to 50ft/lb. Just keep an eye on them on big trips as they do have a habit of coming loose without loctite.

Bearman is absolutely correct and he is far more experienced in these matters than me. The bearings are grease packed. My reference was to the axles.
As Bearman has already indicated just top up the diff and head for home. Maintenance in the shed is always better than maintenance on the side of the road.
