The starter motor on my 24v 101 V8 has disintegrated and needs replacement.

What part has disintegrated?

Mine also failed. The auto elec told me they didn't exist and I really had a 12V starter. When I plonked it in front of him he was genuinely surprised. Anyway, he dismantled it and told me which parts I needed. I sourced the parts, he rebuilt it and happy days.

So, can it be rebuilt? This might be easier than sourcing a new or s/h one.

Hi Mick - yes anything can be rebuilt for a cost.  The armature windings and commutator are wrecked, as well as the bushes and their holder.

AJ does not have a new starter but he does have new armatures so I have ordered one from him.  I have an old 12v starter so will take the end cap off it with the cast brush holder in it and I am in Newcastle at the moment so will go around to ALL 4x4 who have new brushes.

The field windings in the body of the starter seem undamaged so I will reassemble when I get the parts.  If the field windings are shot I will get them rewound.

The one new 24v starter I have been able to find (uk) are 5 times more expensive than new 12v starters.

Thanks

Thanks Geoff - but they are Flickr hosted pics so the only thing downloaded to the site is link to the Flickr site not the actual pic themselves.

Cheers
