Clarence Town 2018 Swim In and Rally.
« on: August 21, 2017, 11:02:18 AM »
Hi,
This is to confirm that we are doing Clarence Town again in 2017.  The dates are 2-5 November, 2017.   I will get some updates published on this site in the very near future for you.  The event went great last year and the planning is going well and looking forward to a great time.  The pub is putting on a spit roast on the Saturday night at $6 per head, at least that's what they told me.   Saturday is also Hawaiian shirt day - so it could get colourful.   ;D   I am after numbers for the pub catering as I don't want people to go hungry.  I would also like know to what vehicle you are bringing.   I am arranging caps again this year, I would like an approximate number of drivers so people don't miss out.

If you are thinking of coming to Clarence Town please email me at  clarencetownswimin@gmail.com.  So I am after numbers of people, and also vehicles.
We plan to go to one of the great sand dunes in Australia - Stockton bight on the Friday.  On the Saturday there will be street parade, and a convoy to a Hunter Valley town
In the next couple months we are doing reconnaissance 4wd runs in the nearby bush to track certain routes for those that like to get their vehicles dirty.  I will provide maps to those that wish to go at their own time, and at their own level of ability.  There will also be a guided tour happening with Rob McShane who took last year’s adventurers.
I would just like to reinforce that there are no service stations at Clarence Town.  So be prepared to bring reserve fuel if you think you might need it.  The nearest service station is about 20 minutes away at Dungog.
The insurance monster has raised its head as I have been approached by the council to obtain insurance.  An organisation called Australian National Street Machine Association (ANSMA) has stepped in to support the event with insurance and I am grateful to them.   The National President, Garry Warnes is a Hunter Valley local and recognises our fledgling event is an asset to the local area and historical vehicle motoring in general.  You can check out the website of ANSMA.
If you have any questions, I am happy to talk with anyone any time, however sometimes I can’t call back for a while, but I will call back. My number is 0438 490981
See the attachment below for further details.
Cheers, Craig.

I attach an update from George our platypus mascot on the Clarence Town event.  If you intend to come please book with the caravan park as George says.   ;)  I want to put a squeeze on the council for extra facilities and if attendees just show up without booking,  there will be a risk the council would have under catered.
Cheers, Craig

It appears that this is going to be a great event. I will have entry forms for the 39th Annual GPA Swim-In and Military Vehicle Gathering at Corowa next March. You can fill in your form and make sure you get on the pre-registered list. I will also have copies of a newsletter which will come out next week. If you want to receive a newsletter let me know and I can add you to the database.

Dungog Council has acted, some say far too quickly, to immediately close the Clarence Town Caravan Park for any camping or any other events, citing flood risk, fire safety and other issues, against the heated protests of the locals who want it to remain open as it brings visitors and money into the town. The council says the infrastructure in the Caravan Park falls well below the required standards and is in disrepair and needed to be closed immediately , despite receiving a grant of of $1.33Mil in Feb from the State government to spend on tourism infrastructure in the area: https://www.dungogchronicle.com.au/story/5873182/13-million-to-promote-tourism/

THIS ARTICLE says that council will seek a meeting with the Military Vehicle Swim-in organisers regarding an alternative venue.

Tonight's "A Current Affair" on Ch9 ran a story that the locals are up in arms over it and considering protests to reverse the decision. It's not uploaded yet, but you should be able to watch the Mar 22nd episode here: https://www.9now.com.au/a-current-affair

Phone number for the Caravan Park is on the flyer above, if you want to offer your support or ask for an update on the situation.
