10 core trailer light cable?
« on: October 04, 2012, 09:33:55 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has or knows of where I can get some of this cable for my No 5 trailer.

The cable currently fitted has a number of faults that are slowly driving me mad. i.e no Left indicator, no tail lights ......

I'd really like to keep it original, but a web search has not come up with much at this stage.

Cheers,

Mike.

Are there any brand names on the cable such as Olex or Triangle?
Pop into Middy's (Middencorp Electrical) and ask if they have any ten core PVC (or XLPE) control cable. Possibly 1.5 sq mm.
Check out the Olex or Triangle cables websites.

Thanks Mick,

I'll try my local Middys.

The cable is original and has no markings whatsoever on the outside.

Its probably at least 40 years old or more.....

The internal cores all have black insulation with numbers written on them, and when I say numbers, they are spelt out. i.e.  instead of 2 they say TWO, THREE etc.  The external diameter is about 21mm.

I think that my cable has failed internally - I cant run power through about half of the cores even though it looks fine on the outside and there are no shorts.

The control cable sounds like the way to go, I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers,

Mike.

Hi Mike_K

Try one of the electrical wholesalers and ask for 10 pair lift cable . It is flexible and is coloured coded similar to vintage wiring

Just an update in case anyone else needs some of this cable,

I got some 11 core + earth cable from my local electrical supply mob. (Middys)    Thanks Mick!

They had to order it in, and they list it as 'Cable rubber flex 1.5mm 11 core + earth submersible'.

It has an Ozoflex mark on the outside.

I didn't really need the 12 cores, but this cable is the right diameter to fit the NATO plug for a tight seal, and looks original.

The best bit is, all of my lights now work, including the blackouts, and there are even some spare cores!

Thanks for the leads Mick and Muddy, much appreciated.

Cheers,

Mike.

No problem Diana,

The cable is black, so looks the part.

Of course, all of the gear fitted to the No 5 has to be submersible!

Cheers,

Mike.
