2a LWB Exhaust pipes
« on: April 23, 2018, 02:17:27 AM »

Hoping to check something.

The weekend I had an exhaust replacement fail being that the intermediate pipe supplied by mail order was not going to fit any which way.

A quick trip to the exhaust shop soon had the Britpart pipe chopped and re welded with a more straight run from the down pipe to the rear axle where it curves over the rear axle casing and makes a right angle for the silencer.

I was thinking today that maybe the new part was not defective but was simply not suitable for Aus Military type chassis.

Is anyone able to verify if 2a LWB exhausts differ too much from civilian?

I have put up a pic of the two pipes for comparison.

Thanks in advance

cheers,

Jamie

Hi Jamie,

You are correct, as you have found the military spec exhaust is totally different to the civvy one.

I am not up to speed with the civilian type, but I think that it runs underneath the chassis, while the military one runs through the holes in the chassis cross members, much higher up and safer from damage.

The military LWB vehicles also use the SWB engine pipe, this is also different to the civilian system.

I have done the same as you, I got my exhaust bloke to modify the civvy pipe to fit the chassis. I did ask him to make me one from scratch, eventually he came back and said that he did’nt have a pipe bender that could bend the pipe at the back to go over the rear axle and then run 90 degrees around to hook up with the muffler. These 2 bends were too close to each other, so we just modified the civvy pipe to fit.

At least the muffler is the same as the civilian one!

Cheers,

Mike.

Thanks Mike,

Who would have thought that they would be so different if you didn't know what to look for. I have done a search now, and it looks like part number 501221 (Military exhaust pipe for Twin Fuel Tanks) is the go.

Wish I had realised this earlier but I am sure the postage from the UK would have been a killer.

I wonder if the civi chassis has the two holes in the cross-member. or just the one for the PTO.

Thanks again

Jamie

cheers,

Jamie

Good question Jamie,

The RPS also mentions 501221 as the correct military part.

I didn’t know that this was fitted to anything overseas though.

68 bucks from LR direct is not too bad, I might throw one into my next big order, the cheap prices cancel out the freight if you order enough bits!

Cheers,

Mike.
