Perentie 110 6x6 - speedo & rev counter
« on: February 25, 2018, 07:12:48 PM »
My speedo has dropped out - has anyone fitted a new cable?
(Driving my truck without a speedo is interesting to say the least 😏 )

I want to fit a rev counter - has anyone done that to the 6x6?

Fitting a new speedo cable is relatively easy. Undo the dash and disconnect the cable from the the rear of the speedo by squeezing the plastic end between 2 fingers. Get underneath and undo the nut that holds the speedo cable onto the rear output housing near the handbrake drum. Pull it out of the clip under the rear axle drive unit and possibly another one under the aircleaner bracket and you should be able to pull it out from the dash. There is a rubber grommet in the firewall where it goes through which will come our with the old cable. The new cable should have the grommet already on it. It's a good idea to tie some twine to the end of the cable before pulling it through - that makes it easier to thread the new one through into the same spot.
The easiest way to fit a tacho to one is by using the alternator as a source. How you do this is to solder a pulse wire onto one of the field coil terminals and this provides a signal to the tacho. Buy a good quality one like VDO. You will have to calibrate it after fitting but that is pretty easy - at idle they run at about 650-700 rpm so just adjust it to that after fitting. Here's a few photos of where you solder the wire and my dash with the tacho in the middle on the top set of gauges.

Thanks for that info I will do the speedo cable this weekend - I didn’t think it would be that tricky - everything else on RADAR has been fairly simple & practical to date 👍 the pictures are great ! Big M

I could be wrong, but looking at the circuit diagram of the alternator in the repair book. I think a tacho could be connected to the feed for the alternator indicator light relay. Any thoughts?

Whoops, apologies, I just saw the circuit of the regulator and there is a capacitor across that line, so may not not be suitable for driving a tacho.

Got that & your oops moment - I hadn’t got that far anyway.
Getting back to the speedo cable - opened all up & all going well until I chased thru the cable !
The cable on RADAR looks to be about double the length of the speedo cable I received 👎 ,
! in theory it was a Landrover perentie 110 (90-92) any wisdom 😏
Is the 6x6 configuration longer? Stupid question obviously 🙄!
It is scotch o’clock time 😎
I obviously have the wrong one 😩

Well I did find out the hard way!
The speedo cable on the 6x6 is about 600 mm longer then the standard Perentie 110 version!
The 6x6 one is 2300 mm give or take a mm. + you will notice the clips are more substantial!
The moral of this story is to make sure when ordering that they know it is for a 6x6! 🤨😎

I know I am a little late (3years..) to the conversation. Perhaps it may be a good idea to change the speedo to an electronic unit.

I have done so in my 110 utilising a VDO 100mm speedo (VDO COCKPIT VISION SPEEDO 12v 24v 200kph 100mm AUTOMOTIVE 4WD 437015029) and the pickup from a later Defender/Disco 1 (VDO YBE100530 SENSOR 340.214/13/4 Land Rover Defender).

I can send pics if required.
