112-498 2a 1/4 GS.
« on: January 28, 2018, 08:08:34 PM »
I have just become the new owner of 112-498, a June 63 88" GS and would love to discover more about its history.

It has always been a dream of mine to add a genuine Australian military 88" to my collection of 1960's British army Land Rovers, but at times it seemed that a dream is all it would remain, however the stars seemed to align and now I'm eagerly awaiting its arrival in June or July.

The current plan is to carry out a recommissioning, just doing the essential jobs required to get it UK registered and on the road. As far as I'm aware it is the only Australian military 2a in the UK.

No doubt I'll be asking some newbie questions, as although not new to Land Rovers I want to ensure I get the details right on this one.

Cheers for now!.

Matt.

Howdy

I'd be interested in the story of how it got to the UK and how you got it.

There is a 2A Aust Army workshop Land Rover in the UK, don't know of any others except yours now.

Cheers
Scott

Cheers,

Just wondering whether anyone can help with prior history on 112-498 before I bought it on eBay last month? The seller had owned it for a year or less.

My intention is to get it registered, carry out a light restoration and display it alongside my 1960's British Army Land Rovers to show the differences (and similarities) between them.

Cheers,

Matt.

The only way to find out anything about it is if any photographs exist of it in the net or with some military units that websites for past/serving members, failing that when you get hold of it you may/may not want to sand down the door panels or the sides of the wings for any markings that could be lurking under paint, so it will be an anxious/sleepless time until in arrives, this is from Remlr and it's not showing any indication of any images
112-498   88   1963   -   Series 2A   6005   Truck, Utility, 1/4 Ton, GS   25143261C   24303524A   -   750x16      Vic.   18.08.77it was disposed of in Victoria on the 18/8/77, and just for interest sake it's 3 digits from my 112-501 which went to Sth Vietnam with 1RAR in June 1965, the first deployment of Aussie troops into the conflict, ? so maybe just maybe it could have went over as well, cheers Dennis
ps I have put aside those items for you until you get the vehicle and you can visually inspect it yourself, n see what you actually need,,.

Thanks again Dennis for your reply and putting those parts aside for me, I appreciate it.

It sounds like a broadly similar situation to researching British army vehicles, though some records of which unit a vehicle was with exist, but with some significant gaps.

I'm really looking forward to it arriving😀

Matt.

The seller you bought it from on eBay had only owned it for several months. He had bought it off eBay as well from another seller around the other side of the bay in Melbourne. That previous seller had only owned it for a matter of weeks I believe, buying it off a farm or such.

Thanks 2short. Fortunately it doesn't seem to have been particularly abused or modified since leaving service, and has most of the military fittings intact.

Cheers,

Matt.

I like the 1/4 ton sign on the rear, I haven't seen very many of them.

2short thanks for adding the pictures, I had tried but couldn't work out how to reduce the size sufficiently.

Obviously someone took care to mask off the 1/4 ton marking when the Landy was repainted, but what do others think about the overall paint job, could it have been done in service or later in civvi hands?.

I have other pictures and the Max Speed marking is still present on the dash. The interior definitely hasn't been repainted since it left the army.

The drivers door is from a Series Three, as are both door tops.

What do others make of the two holes drilled in the rear capping? They appear on the drivers side as well.

I would think the paint is original.
The holes were for roof rack supports that were on the vehicle but taken off by the seller you bought it from.

Thanks. Do you happen to have any pictures saved from the previous auction?. Feel free to message me if you prefer.
