SoundProofing RFSV
« on: January 17, 2018, 08:20:51 AM »
Hi All,

Sorry if this is in the wrong area, but it made the most sense to put it here to me.
I'm looking at soundproofing the RFSV, I had a rollover in it about 12 months ago now and have finally got the engine back to put back in. (Long story short, rebuild required because I left the engine running too long on its side.)
I only thought about it last night, but given that the engine is out at the moment I figured now would be the best time to look at soundproofing.
What products have people used? I've seen a number with Dynamat and Sound Deadener (Car Builders)
Is there much difference in the quality of the products?
Car Builders seem to have a single cab pack that looks like it might be almost enough for what I need. so I'm leaning that way at the moment.
The other question is with the engine out is it worth looking at a paint on deadener in the engine bay/under the cabin? Has anyone done this before with much success? What is required to do this, can I just give it a clean with soap and water and then paint over, or do I need to sand back the paint?

Cheers,
Tripps

I have been thinking about if it is worth trying to do something with my RFSV as well so I will be interested in how you go with it.

I googled sound proofing as much as I could and the only comparison I could find showed that Jing Ping sound deadener works better than dynamat and is a fair bit cheaper.  (I would expect if this claim was not true Dynamat would refute it).  It wasn't independent testing, so may be rubbish, but it was enough to make me choose JingPing.  I didn't do the engine bay or bonnet just the floor pans on the inside and under the seat box.  I should have done a decibel test but never, however I can say I used to have my radio volume control on 62 and now have in in 40's and 50's so it has made some difference but it is still relatively loud.  I would recommend it and will be doing my other car in the same stuff (CF bedford Van) shortly.
I would like to hear what different tyres do.  I would recommend either JingPing or Dynamat as they will both make a difference.
I think that JingPing is probably just the Chinese ripoff of Dynamat as they look pretty similar both being butyl rubber on a foil backing.

I would like to hear what different tyres do.

...

I can confirm that ordinary off-road tyres (e,g, BFG MTs) are considerably quieter than Hi-Milers.

I am also aware that a lot of  owners choose retain the split rims and the tyres that came with them for authenticity :)

I kept the Hi-Milers and split rims but am running the normal AY rims and the Michilins and they are definitely a lot quieter.

Been looking at something appropriately called 'Lizard Skin' a spray on sound dampener and they also make a heat sheild spary too...handy
http://www.lizardskin.com/

Can be a bit pricey but essentially its a mix of Micro Ballons powder and Latex paint.

Hi Chris, if you're still running hi-milers on split rims, I think that there is precious little that spray-on sound proofing will do, but let us know how you go :)
