Hi Craig,

LRC ACT doesn’t have many LR owners in it, doesn’t promote LR as a mark and are more interested in the cafe latte sort of thing.... if you’re retired and have heaps of cash then they do quite a few outback tours etc. There are plans to address this, but that will take time and maybe a couple of years off.

There are better, more active 4WD clubs in the region - just google and check them out.

If you want a military vehicle club close to Canberra then there is AMEC. It is a regional based club that has a small, but active membership that is focused on restoration of all sorts of military vehicles. Importantly, it has a good Committee, insurance for club activities, and concessional rego for ACT & NSW members.

Hi Craig, the LRC ACT has many experienced members who have been there and done that. Not just 4wd trekking but a load of bushwalking, world travel, and not just civvy street. Many have defence experience too. MMy first visual of the LRC here looked like a couple of the usual head shed types complete with clipboards and forms but it was just confirmation bias on my part; they are very experienced and run events smoothly and efficiently with as little time wasting as possible.

I am not a member yet but I know they have a really nice private property out Majors Creek way.

As for your idea of a national club ... the Facebook page is roaring along it seems and 'London to a brick' they will start a club one day. Even a KLR Club sounds good.

Wish list: some convoys of Perenties to the Darling River or someplace handy to the eastern states every two years for a "Perentie Paddock" - camping, vendors, displays, swaps etc. That would mean a few forms and clipboards for sure.

On second thought maybe a place out past Bathurst close to Justin... or a Sporting Block out near the Pilliga.

No that is not true - the LRC ACT does not own any property - the property you are thinking about is privately owned by a member of the Club and occasionally invites Club members out for a BBQ or working bee.  Mainly used if the Club Christmas Party is being held nearby at the Majors Creek showground.

Also for everyone on the forum - on the LRC ACT - note that the club is not a Landrover (Marque) club - it is a 4wd Club that is open to all types of 4wds.  I am a member and have my 101, my RRS and my Haflinger which is on Historic Rego listed with the Club. 

The main Club conducts regular training days which are great fun and are conducted in the SE NSW region - had my RRS on a great day out 4 weeks ago - as well as various modern vehicles we had a late 60s Nissan Patrol Series 60.  Trips are not normally programmed by the club but are put forward by a Trip Leader - these do tend to be longer outback trips but if someone does want a local trip that will happen as well.  No, it is not a latte sipping club but does cater on a monthly basis for the social side with a breakfast run for those so inclined.  The club also has what is called a Series Sub section which is aimed at older leaf sprung Landies but is open to all older style 4wds and some Perenties are present.

So the LRC ACT has something for everyone but it is important to note that it is the membership not the committee that proposes trips so you get out of the club what you put into it.

As also mentioned there is AMEC which I have previously been a member of which would suit the needs of any Perentie owner.

So there are options.

Hi Garry, I have read a few of the newsletters the club publishes on the club website, mainly for trip reports because they go all over. Thats where I saw the mention of the working bees at the Majors Creek property. Are they building a club obs course or amenities out there? Is it a swap meet sort of thing?

No it is just private property owned by a person who happens to be in the club - nothing more nothing less.  The property has nothing to do with the LRC ACT though the owner has asked Club members to visit from time to time.

Dont be put off of the "Collector" aspect of AMEC - simply means you own something military - doesn't have to be a vehicle.  just a group of people with a common interest and probably more suited to your needs rather than LRC ACT.

As I said the committee does not run the trips as such, so for Series Trips you will probably have to list and run them yourself.

Why not join both

AMEC is great Craig and I can vouch for it, but if you want to be in a club, look around at the other regional clubs and find one that suits your needs.....avoid disappointment by doing your own research... some of the clubs do a ‘try before you buy’ thing

‘breakfast, lies & coffee’ started out as a monthly Series Land Rover event within LRC ACT, but under a different title I believe. Due to its success and popularity, the Club Committee then forced the inclusion of all members vehicles (non LR). These members slowly took over the event and made it what it is today.... a black top drive to a regional coffee shop for a bite to eat and a brew.... that might suit some, but not those involved in the Series side of things.

There will be changes for the Landy marque (thanks Garry lol) in the Canberra region, but it will take time....
