Mods for a NSW blue slip - No. 5 Trailer
« on: October 02, 2017, 08:47:37 PM »
I'm bummed. I have been away travelling for a few months and while I was away my No. 5 trailer ran out of rego and the grace period has expired too, meaning it will have to have a complete blue slip inspection. I am bummed because I have a feeling I will have to modify the trailer to meet the blue slip standards. My trailer was built in 1963 and aside from  7-pin civilian socket fitted by the previous owner, and the locked lunette ring, it's in original Vietnam War-era configuration.

I arrived home with just a couple of days to go on the grace period for rego whereby all I'd need is a normal pink slip to get it back on the road. The mechanic looked it over and said I had to fit mudflaps and that the right side wheel bearing was a bit noisy and would have to be replaced before he'd pass it. He was also concerned about the original configuration lights, which are a set of blinkers and a single stop/tail/numberplate light unit in a bucket shaped housing. He called someone at RMS who indicated the single light would be a problem if it was a full blue slip inspection, but should be OK for a pink slip.

I tried to find new wheel bearings locally, but no luck. In the end I had to order a set online and they arrived four days after the grace period ended so I haven't even looked at the trailer since. With the purchase of a 110 FFR vehicle a few days ago, I'd best get the trailer sorted out and back on the road.

I am pretty much resigned to the fact that the trailer won't pass a blue slip with the original single in-service tail light setup. Obviously I want it to pass a blue slip so I can use it out bush, but I also want any mods to look original and "period".

I haven't dragged it into town for a blue slip inspection yet, so I'm wondering do I take it somewhere else? Does anyone know any mil vehicle-friendly places within about an hour of Sydney who might not require irreversible mods to this trailer for rego? If I do need to mod the tail lights, what do you guys think about simply adding a second original bucket style stop/brake/numberplate light bucket to the opposite side of the trailer so it has two? That'd maintain the original "style" but should satisfy the mechanic's interpretation of the regs.

Here's a thought. Put a trailer board on it. Get it blue slipped. Take the trailer board off.

Or

Would joining a club and getting historic rego on it work?

I use a trailer board each year for the pink slip but it is towed behind a series3 gs most of the time with original lights and wiring, use a board its legal and no mods required for full rego :)

Yeah, I'd be bummed if you were forced to butcher 101-001. In fact, I'd suggest that even having the Army-modified Hella indicators on that trailer is heresy.

Thanks for the tip about the trailer board. I'll pick one up this arvo to use it for rego.

I may be borrowing trouble here, but has anyone had problems with the police defecting one of these original configuration trailers due to the factory single tail light setup? I don't want to be bailed up by the highway patrol in the middle of a trip in SA or the NT and defected.

@303gunner I won't be butchering the trailer. If it came to the crunch I'd sell it before that happened and buy a less original one.

Never heard of it.
But, remember, these trailers complied with the ADRs AT THE TIME OF MANUFACTURE.
I often see many older vehicles that simply would not meet current ADRs, and yet, they are registered.

ADRs were introduced in 1970.

And we are talking about a 1963 trailer. How's your maths?

Oh, I see now, My apologies.
I was thinking of the first edition ADRs.

Craigb, same issue in all states with half awake inspectors.  Issues are, lunette eye does not have OEM or spec forged into it with raised lettering and Nato plug wont cut it with VSB01 or ADR's.  Tail lights wont make it either.   Then there is the serial number or VIN number debacle. You may need to be a little inventive to get it thru.   Put decent hella ADR compliant lights across the back, ie 2 stop, 2 tail, a No. plate light and indicators, left and right.  The NATO socket does comply with Specs in ADR's and VSB01 but its too hard to explain to soft foots.
What I did was get a discreet ID plate made with trailer S/N on it and GVM of 750 kg and manufacturers name which has to be (Now) ADI...Australian Defence Industries's.   Also had the lunette eye changed to a certified Trigg or Tregg rubber block coupling.   Much quieter!!!!
Remember with a Tare mass in the order of 350 kG's you have not legally got much of a payload.  The GVM is 750 kG in any state.

If the trailer was civvy registered before and after ADR's and VSB01, you would not have an issue, but it wasnt and you will need to comply on first civvy rego.

We had a ACT inspector fail a blue slip check on a fresh from AFM No 5. This was Sept 2017.

Why did they fail it? The minor fault was the need/placement of $3 reflectors on the sides in line with the axle, but the main fault was they deemed the axle to be in need for repositioning 15cm along the chassis. Uh huh. (?)
This would involve an engineer's certification of course. Perhaps the inspector just didn't want an old trailer on his books. Perhaps he was being Capt. Cautious and just sticking to easy inspections on common vehicles or something. Perhaps ... who knows.

A different inspector at a different shop in a different suburb passed the trailer soon afterward.

WOW! Up here (Qld) you self certify a number 5. If it needs a VIN they give you one to fill in and rivet on, sight unseen.
